According to Notch and Jeb, the old worlds will be just fine, although the transition going from the 1.7.3 world to the 1.8 world may look very ugly. You can imagine what it may look like for a mountain to just stop halfway and turn into grassland.

But yeah, I've seen Notch and Jeb repeatedly tell people that their old world will be fine, although it will be a rough transition when loading new chunks.

You can play on old worlds, but you will have to travel away from your spawn point for the new things to generate.

That's actually going to be my biggest problem come 1.8. I traveled fairly far outside of the spawn the first week I started playing and now the original spawn area is covered in buildings, farms, and traps for mobs. I like to keep everything connected so the first thing I'll have to do is pick and choose which direction I'm going in. I guess I'll use creative mod first to work on a path that goes fairly far out.

Or...

I could make a few nether portals to get the job done faster.

Anyways, only two more days before this is supposed to happen!

Just read on the forums that Jeb posted that 1.8 probably won't be released on the 8th because of this reason: "to allow time for more thorough testing and quality assurance"

Yeah, Notch actually posted something earlier today about him working on more minecraft next week for something "secret" in the future.

I just hope that the update comes before October. It's just been a long wait. When they show you content in July, you don't expect to wait three months for the update.

It'll probably come out next week. A weekend is probably all he needs to make sure there are no major bugs before they release it.

Jeb said the next best guess was this coming monday, so the 12th. It's not that I'm upset because I understand that Jeb was the only one for a while working on minecraft.

At least we know it's coming and that the update is going to be huge.

I love 1.8 so far. I made a new world and started testing everything out, and so far I've found a ton of iron and a little diamond. I found an abandoned mineshaft, and got a lot of free minecart tracks .

I agree in a sense. I REALLY can't wait for 1.8, but I want to just because I don't want to play a buggy game, and the excitement is really building up

All i can say about 1.8 is that it is AMAZING! I already found some diamonds and a bunch of iron and I even found a NPC village which I will probably surround with a castle to stay away from those creepy... endermans. TMI is already updated too so I basically can experiment with all of the new items

Please note the 1.3 tower's 7 stories is from the double lobby where the biggest use of glass is
Beta 1.8 Tower (10 Stories High (Nicknamed the Enderman Tower)):

The Enderman Tower picture was taken from halfway across the NPC Village and is farthest out from the village.
