What kind of story??

Now, don't quite base this answer off how you wanted the Pirates of the Caribbean movies to go when you answer this;

________________________________________________

If you were to read a pirate story...

Option #1: Would you prefer a story that sticks strictly to traditional pirate-like plots. What I mean by that is, do you like to read pirate stories that are more realistic than not?
(i.e. POTC 1 was more 'realistic' than POTC 3 in my opinion.)

OR

Option #2: Would you like a story that while keeping to tradition pirate-like plots, throws in a bit of fantasy and kind of out-there adventure... and varies in settings as well. (Example: Aztec Fire-God, abilities such as seeing the future, and prophecies)
________________________________________________

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is if the second scenario is a little 'too much' for a pirate story. I've been having tremendous trouble continuing my book because I'm not sure what the reader would prefer. So I figured I'd turn to my fellow pirates! Who would know better aye?

I apologize if the options are difficult to understand. If you have any questions, please ask Thank you in advance everyone!

First off, Kudos on writing a book.

It really depends on what is you audience, are you targeting a more mature audience or a PG audience (no pun intended)? Once you answer this you can proceed your path. If its a more serious and somber adventure with pirates then I would go with A. However if you want a lighter POTC style then definitely B.

Granted, all 3 POTC have their dark moments they are lighter in the way they were made.

If you go with A, then you can't really have any fantastic moments. It has to be based in pirate history and facts, which include weapons, ships, and all of the things they used.

If you go with B, then you have more freedom to make stuff up. It has to be slightly based on history and facts.

You need a good mix of both, look up legends of pirates and the seven seas, then explore your options. Use reality to explore the fantastic. Black Pearl. Rather than using fantasy to explore reality. The other 2.

It also comes with a matter of taste. Some like Dracula others like Twilight. If that makes sense.

I hope that helped. If you need a critique let me know.

As a thought on the subject I was at the book store the other day and saw a book titled the Vampirates-(nosferatu sail the seven seas lol)- more on the fantasy end here to say the least. I wouldn't read it even though I like vampires novels and Pirate stories as I just don't see it as a viable mix. The Kraken, Jolly Rogers, Davey Jones, undead Skeletons, and the like while fantasy are pirate related and work well in a pirate story in my opinion. What im trying to get at is fantasy is great and keeps your book from being a Master and Commander style story where you spend pages discussing the rigging of the ship. Just keep in mind that some things mix and some don't( pirates meet aliens at sea not happening/futuristic pirates with solar panel sails on intergalactic war frigates I can buy) and shoot for somewhere in the middle.

Just my .02

Pirates of the caribbean stories are option 2 and i like that. While not going too far-fetched into fantasy, a bit of traditional pirates stuff would be nice. You'd be copying pirates if you were to make a movie like that. I dont get it - a youtube vid or are ye a real director? If ur the latter go with a traditional movie. If your the former do option 2

Its not a movie I'm making, but rather a book. Basically the examples I give for option 2: (Aztec Fire-God, abilities such as seeing the future, and prophecies) are ideas is where my story is currently heading. Basically, Im afraid it may be too much for a pirate story.

I personally like the ideas, Im just afraid not everyone will share my enthusiasm. My target audience is probably teens and young adults. Without givnig too much away, the Aztec Fire God plays (will play) a big role in the story. Im just afraid that introducing him may take away from the piracy at times. Still contemplating and all, but I greatly appreciate your inputs! Thank you so much!

Hmmm, hard desision.I would say it could vary from place to place,I mean if your in say San Juan ,or St. Croix there would be less of a chance on running into say a fire god.But if you are somewheres else your chances just might be higher of finding such a thing.I might be thinking PotC to much here myself, I may have to come back on a clearer head.
