Sailing Lessons
As posted in "Basil's Plunder Party, DW Guild Night Events" thread, we will start having a series of "Sailing Lessons".
This will be a small series of nights where we will spend about an hour covering basic sailing techniques. Not on Guild nights, this will be held on other nights. I figure we can cover most of this in just a couple of nights. There are a lot of different ways to sail. 3 classes of ship: Sloop, Galleon, and Frigate. Each has it's good points, and each has it's bad points. There are different techniques for sailing solo, in small crew, or in large crew. (Crew Sizes) There is also different techniques to sailing for rep, for ship count, and for gold. (Reasons) We should be able to cover all of this in just a few nights, and here in the forums. I am asking a few of the senior pirates in the guild to join in and help with this. Anyone can join in. We will sail one class of ship each lesson. Crew up and discuss the different objectives for the night, and then put things in practice. First lesson will be tomorrow, Monday, at about 8:30 PM Eastern. Topic for tomorrow: Frigates, all 3 crew sizes, and all 3 reasons. OBTW: I copied this from the VIL thread. I believe it still applies. My order of buying ships: ( just my opinion) Light Sloop - given to ya. Skip the other "Light" class ships. First ship to buy: Regular frigate when you can. 5K isn't that much, and you can now carry 9 cargo.(Soon to be increased.) This ship will help you get sailing to level 15 faster than the regular Galleon or Sloop. Keep the light sloop for speed runs to other islands. Second ship to buy: War Galleon as soon as you hit level 15 sail and have the gold. This is the ship you will use to earn the gold you need for anything else you want to buy. Keep the Frigate for small crew action, and the light sloop for speed runs. (Some people stop here. This is enough to keep them happy.) Third ship to buy: War Frigate, when you can afford it. Sell the regular frigate in order to make space for it. Last ship to buy: War Sloop. Sell the light sloop to make room.

I couldn't give anyone a lesson in sailing - and my map reading skills stink too! Although I do think my sailing has improved since I was building my first pirate and I despised sailing. Now I make myself go out there and do it, but mostly solo because I scare other people. Except Zilly, who is used to me scaring her!
If I can be ingame by then, I'll be ready to learn.

I may not be little, and I know I;ve sailed plenty with the Dueces, but I'd still love to learn as well!
This will be a grand old time. I'll bring a special jar of dirt, just for the occasion! |

I'll join the fun - have a War Galleon and War Sloop to lend when those ships are needed.

Ahh, love the idea. Not sure how I missed this elsewhere though.
I would volunteer to help but one, I don't have time, and two, I have my own ways of sailing that aren't widely heralded by the rest of the guild. I mean, there was a reason I was going in circles people! |

Oh Richard, A Pirate after my own heart!! I am a circler too!!!!! I would love to learn other ways & have tried other ways but when alone circling gets lots less damage for me so far! Happy to try new ways though
Btw the circling also works with lvling doll alone!!

Tonight at 8:30pm (EST)? That's very doable for me. But would need to know where mate?
I have the Freebooter Destroyer, my war frigate available and happy to demonstrate combat tactics, or let others use it for practice. |

Are you sailing all three sizes of each class? I must say I had a regular frigate for all of one day on Hawke. I hated how much damage it took, the smaller cargo, it didn't seem to have the oomph I love in my galleon. I'd love to know if this was something I was doing so count me in. Particularly since I can handle the mid weights just fine, but the warships? HA! The one time I tried to sail a war frigate I darn near sank the thing.
I forget whose ship it was but it was quite nice of her to let me nearly sink her ship. On the sizes of ship if you are sailing all three weights of ship per class, I'm more than happy to lend my Black Dragon for the Galleon class. Feel free to sink her if you need to to learn, can't tell you how many times I have.

Tonight will be Frigates. Basil is working on a "lesson plan", and will hopefully have it up before we begin. (you know he has to make it just right...)
Once we get in game, we can chat up a plan as to who is sailing with who, decide ship by ship who's the teacher and who's the student. Just playing it by ear tonight, as it's the first. *i imagine Basil will totally edit and correct this when he gets back... ![]() Stay tuned. |

Remember mates, we're not here to JUDGE the various classes of vessel - but to help fellow pirates make the MOST of the ship they have.
