The best way to get max points is to hit the mast first instead of the hull

once the masts are down hit the hull for 110 points of cannon for those shooting and sailing at the helm

And don't hog them either. If you see other pirates docked at Cuba or sailing around, let them have a turn or two. There are 3 ships out there...they respawn fairly quickly...they don't all belong to you! -)

Use the Ghost Frigates to practice your long-distance broadsides too. And your passing broadsides. And your long-distance passing broadsides. They don't shoot back.

Then go out and find a nice Light Galleon to practice broadsides. The ones that shoot back. It takes a while but you can sink them with only broadsides. Don't forget to remove their masts before using broadsides.

I haven't bothered going to any islands that aren't within my quests. Thanks for the knowledge, I'm now off to find some of these ghost ships. I've seen one lingering around Devil's Anvil lately, but it's not giving a lot of rep.

Yes used Ghost ships at Cuba for my cursed wood, but also for broadsides, managed to get to 3/4 of level 2 sailing. I still have no crew, so useful for broadside practice.

Altho broadside are still unreliable, still shooting up or dwon, only 1 in about 5 shotting out, unless they fixed that in last few days, havent been on for little while.

Here is another tip:

Ever notice that after you shoot down all the masts on the Ghost ships, there is that little part of the blue mast bar left...like something is still there that you missed? You try to hit that little flag pole hanging off the stern of the ship...but the cannon balls just go right through it. You are totally stumped what you need to do in order for all the blue bar to disappear?

Well, it is part of the mast. The secret is....you have to shoot down the masts as if you were peeling an onion. Start with the top parts first...then middle...then bottom. Each part has a crow's nest seperating each sail. Remove all the sail parts and the entire blue mast bar will disappear...and you will get 200+ reputation score.

This also works on the War Frigates that sail around.
