Number Puzzler

I came across a number puzzle, that I can't figure out for the life of me. I think my problem is that I'm thinking of the more complex stuff. If anyone can figure it out, I'll probably feel really stupid for missing it, but I'd love it if someone would at least help me.

Figure out the pattern in the first three examples and use it to figure out the last.

1, 3, 4 (16)
2, 6, 1 (18)
5, 2, 7 (28)
3, 4, 5 (?)

I have an idea, but the third set of numbers throws me off.

4 + 12 + 2 = 18

(5 x 2 + 2 x 2 + 7 x 2) 28
10 + 4 + 14 = 28

(3 x 2 + 4 x 2 + 5 x 2) = x
6 + 8 + 10 = 24
Took me a second, but I have it figured out.

The only part that makes no sense to me is why the fourth number drops back down.

I think your all overthinking

Actually Jack has it, but still made it harder than it had to be:

1, 3, 4 (16)
2, 6, 1 (18)
5, 2, 7 (28)
3, 4, 5 (?)

(1+3+4) * 2 = 16
(2+6+1) * 2 = 18
(5+2+7) * 2 = 28
(3+4+5) * 2 = 24

Why is the last number smaller? Who cares, thats not part of the puzzle as far as I could determine.

Student to teacher on answer sheet:

"It was awful! Train "A" hit a big rig that was stalled on the tracks. Train "B" was derailed in Arizona by a bridge that was washed out in a flash flood. Thankfully the conductors were ok, but those trains never made it to Texas."

Train A: New York --> Texas
Train B: California --> Texas

Train A: 1775miles @ 42mph = 1 day, 18 hrs, 18 min
Train B: 1485miles @ 25mph = 2 days, 11 hrs, 24 min

TRAIN A (from New York) would get there first.

I am curious as to why a train would only be traveling 25 mph on a cross-country journey though.

note: This is considering trains left center of state and parralleled major highways. If the trains didn't stop, they would collide with each other 12 miles west of Pecos, Texas along Highway 20 near the intersection with Highway 10.

Yay math!
