what i think should be done is those who rep steal do indeed need to be punished we cant lat thes people get away with this rude act.Not ownly is it rude it desturbs people from training and keeps them from geting full rep which helps one level.

no, it is a game and there a lot of people playin, yes it rude but if ther payin they have rights to play where ever, to many rule in this world anyway. you can alway talk to them not to, but if that doesn't work i always move on to a quieter sever. it no big deal .

Its mean and cruel to steal rep, all its saying is that the one stealing rep cant do anything on their own. If i steal rep, i always make sure it is ok first

two days ago i was leveling up my pistol, which is now mastered, I had to politly ask a pirate to stop helping me, then she tried to crew up with me, I said No, then she left the island. She was sort of stealing my rep, and yesterday I finally leveled up my pistol

ok, weve so had this conversation over and over.
There really is no such thing as rep stealing. Someone cannot steal from you what was not yours in the first place.

A player can be inconsiderate and continue to bother other players by attacking the same creatures, etc. Even relying on them when asked not to, etc. Still this isnt stealing anything, its showing a lack of consideration.

Many consider it "helping" the other person, so if you did not kindly ask the person to stop in the first place, it could just as easily be said your stealing reps from them. (if you use the "stealing" definition).

Standard pattern for a pirate.

Just starts out... leans on other pirates trying to get things done (advanced pirates call you a rep stealer)

Now your starting to get going, you still get help from other pirates, some enjoy helping, some call you a rep stealer.

Now your really going well, you have a grasp on the game, newer players are starting to use you to help them gain an advantage (you now call these individuals rep stealers).

As it get harder and harder to level, you get more and more angry at "rep stealers" (which you once were yourself).

Then you master your pirate, and suddenly its all about helping other people, and noones a rep stealer anymore.



A vicious cycle

Should rep stealers be punished? No, because we all at one time in the game did so ourselves.
You dont think you ever have? I believe anyone making such claim is a liar, that would mean they did absolutely EVERYTHING without ANY help from ANY other person, friend, spouse, or family member, guild member or by using any of thier accounts (ie more than one account). Everyone wants to think they are perfect, we are all far from it.

I've usually considered rep stealers to be someone about the same level as me, who refuses to crew but attacks the same mob in KH that I'm working, never taking turns.

Someone who does that, knows that they are getting way less rep than they should be. If you add up the rep they get, plus the rep I get, it is less than what either would get if attacking alone (even when factoring in "rounding errors.")

It would avoid a lot of grief, if you could switch servers when on KH. (And not have to spend 4 minutes and 34 seconds sailing, due to someone else being "rude.")

Failing that, yes, it would be delightful to give a rep-stealer a free teleport back to Port Royal (on a different server!)

I just realised today that Jim's Insight Thread on 'REP Investment' was lost in the 'Scuttle' a few weeks back.

That really is unforutnate - as it probably was the most informatitive and detailed information we ever had on REP.

But - the reality of it is that REP and its quests to obtain it really isn't 'thievery' but 'investment'. If you attack 1 NPC and it takes 1 minute and you get 100 REP - then two of you attack 1 NPC and it takes only 30 seconds and you get 50 REP - did you REALLY lose REP?

The question really isn't REP 'thievery' or 'invenstment' in the end... it's Manners. Plain and Simple. MMO's and their interaction of 'fake characters' which real people control unfortunately allow for the more 'unpleasant' side of people to be displayed - like magically allowing people to just 'ditch' everything nice and frankly be rude and inconsiderate.

Now, do I have a problem with someone asking for assistance? Or if they can help me with an NCP for a Quest? Even help for several or an afternoon to level up? No. Why? Because they ASKED and were POLITE about it.

Now, do I have an isue of often RUDE - INCONSIDERATE fools who just jump in then start screaming at you? Absolutely!

But I don't believe these people should be Banned for REP Stealing - but banned for their true purpose - Rude and Inappropraite Behavoir.

So to answer the Question - I voted 'No'. People shouldn't be Banned for REP Stealing, because they really are not stealing. But ban them for rude behavoir... and it gets a big yes from me.

Who said anything about banning? That would be more than a little too harsh, I think. The punishment should coincide with the infraction, e.g.: rudeness (rep-stealing) on Kingshead = one free teleport back to Port Royal.

Absolutey, I agree with Zep. Well said.

I think I went through every one of those steps, though, for me, I got more frustrated with rep "stealing" with my second pirate than my first. I had no idea such a thing existed until I came here.

And there are inconsiderate people on both sides of this. Yes, some who repeatedly attack a target when they have been asked not to are rude, but I have also seen how some of these people "ask." It's not usually "kindly" done.

Ok agreed - Ban was probobly a bit strong... A free TP to the unknown would be kinda funny actually LOL
