Any tricks to sailing/cannoning in the fog?

Is the fog just random or is there some rhyme or reason to why it covers certain ships (always mine it seems?) And has anyone figured a good way of dealing with it? I can use the map to get from island to island but I always seem to be plowing through others' ships and I certainly can't position myself accurately for any battles.

OK, does anyone else actually see the fog? Or have trouble seeing through it? It completely whites out my screen.

Nevermind, I fixed my own problem. Seems I was having a graphics driver issue. This was also why I wasn't able to see the icons on my skills page. I downloaded an udated driver from Intel and now my screen is clear. Apparently you are not supposed have your entire sailing screen obscured by white fog.
