Windows Mojave
Warning: Not Pirate related...
Has anyone seen the most recent marketing ploy by Microsoft? Showing VISTA to end users that are not computer savvy, showing them the fancy bells and whistles, and then telling them when they say its neat that its really Vista. They boast about peoples "rating" of Vista when presented to them as "Mojave". What they do not do, is go back a month later and re-interview these people after they got the OS (which would be REAL information on the subject at hand). On the official site, I find it ironic, that they did also include one man that WAS computer savvy who asks them "Why is this faster?" indicating he saw no change in speed (all 3rd party lab tests show that Vista is slower than XP, and latest Vista patchs to speed it up, actually slowed it down further). Why did they include several seconds of the unsuspecting computer noobs responses, but only a very short sentence/excerpt from the one guy that appears to know anything about computers (which made a negative comment). Does Microsoft tell you that in thier current Vista installs theres an option to downgrade? If they were so confident... whats that about? Microsoft wants us to just take thier word for it and follow them blindly. Seems like they are now trying to use their "monopoly" against us end users instead of thier competitors. Dont really have anything against Microsoft, but im definately not a Vista fan, and I dont like the way Microsoft preys on the minds of those that have little computer savvy. When my system died I had a hard time finding anyone that would sell an XP system (or if they did it didn't do what I need it to do).
I got Vista doing most of what I want it to (I play Pirates on my Mac) but the language was colorful for a few days after I fired the new system up. |

As for getting XP only because people are naive and settle for what they are first told, you can get it, even Vista itself comes with a downgrade option now. only reason people might think its faster in those ads is because MS is showing them on high end systems, not the systems that most people are upgrading. Tests performed by PcMag, PcComputing to name a few show that Vista is slower than XP, and its not about native applications like some will claim. Simple file copying which is built in, is much slower with Vista, and thats with top notch equipment so much for that 32/64bit architecture. ![]() Facts are facts, Microsofts ad campaign is heresay. I'll stick to the facts. My biggest gripe, is that they try to force letting Vista do everything for you, including manager your files. Some people are computer "lazy" and want it to do this for them. I want my files organized a specific way, and Microsofts way is ineffective, and inefficient. I've edited files 3-4 times trying to overwrite an original and Vista out thinks me and says you couldnt possibly have wanted to overwrite the original, and tucks my new copy someplace I have no clue where it is, and of course doesnt help me as its not where it needs to be. Until I turned of the User Access Control in Vista which MS would never recommend anyone doing, the OS was making decisions for me that I did not want it to make. If I wanted "Windows for dummies" id go buy the book and read it and learn about using windows, I would never install it on my computer as my OS. |

So thats why i put my files in order (ex. my quest picture files) and when i look back they are re-arranged >_<

I used to be a highly tech savy individual. I had Vista years ago back when it was still code named Longhorn. The only reason I ever thought VISTA would be good was the new file system...which never came out when VISTA was released.
As far as all the eye candy goes, it is nothing more than a rip-off of the open source based accelerated graphics 3D desktops found on some Linux distributions. In fact, almost everything new in VISTA is a rip-off of open source projects used mostly on Linux. When Intel decides NOT to upgrade to VISTA as recently as July, 2008 after convincing Microsoft not to have per-core licensing with the multi-core Intel processors...well, that pretty much says it all IMHO. |

Vista seems like a fancied up and slowed down version of XP. Much prefer XP over vista

You mentioned.. a filing system.. Is this why for the life of me I can't find my screenshots?
With my old pc with xp.. I just hit F9 and knew that my shots would be in my Pirates online folder. With my new pc .. I have a dedicated Print screen key.. F9 and F12 don't work for screen shots and I have no clue where my shots have gone. Not in the Pirates file..that's for certain. It seems like the only way I can save a screen shot is to have Paint open and immediately edit (ie save the print screen image). Before I could just go and pick and choose what I wanted to work with from the multitude of shots I took earlier in the game.

Vista plain and simple is not worth the effort.
I have access to unlimited versions of Vista Ultimate for over a year now and I booted up a system to run for 6 months just by itself to PLAY with vista to see if I like it. Nope.... No way not going to happen Vista is workable only if you turn off all the eye candy and strip it bare off all the stupid stuff Microsoft placed in there to slow down everything and then you can at least use it for everyday mundane uses. XP pro service pack 2 runs circles around Vista even for computer saavy people vista is too much of a PITA. They whole basis of vista is that you should only do things the way vista does and as soon as you try doing it any other way you end up fighting the OS. Thank god big business and uncle sam refuse to change to vista so that there is continued support for XP. I am building a new PC this very moment (parts arrived today) and if my mother board does not have XP drivers for chipset etc... I am going to go postal shortly Plain and simple I would rather PAY for XP Pro then RUN VISTA ULTIMATE for free which tells you how much it is not liked. |

I be very computer savvy (most of the time lol) and i have VISTA on one of my computers and i like it. it is actually the one i run Pirates on and i dont usually get any lag from VISTA being "slow" it be faster than my XP but that might be because my XP is overflowing with stuff. lol
overall VISTA is a good product. not the best though |

I have three comps all of which I use for music n film in my day job n gaming also as part of my day job and for funnn!
Two are vista the other xp, I got no problem with either, actually the xp one has the disadvantage takin soo long to boot cos its the oldest of them but thats all. Work wise, I run lotsa programmes at once need speed n good detail, I get them no bother on all three. Although Mac's they are definatley not ! I know a lot dont like vista but I havent found enuff to dislike that swings me away from it yet. I dont like having the wool pulled over my eyes tho, so how vista is marketed would make me grind my teeth if I could be bothered to watch an ad, but I cant so I dont, and Im cool with it.

This explains a bit why you might not find Vista as trying as many of us.
If you are familiar with Macs, and the way they work, perhaps the Vista OS is closer in tune with the Mac OS. Vista is probably very easy to use for new computer users, it's the older more savvy computer users that seem to have the most difficulty with it. I call Vista "Windows for Dummies" as it seems to have dumbed down the interface making it easier for new basic computer users, but more difficult for advanced users to do the things they have become accustomed to doing on thier computer. Advanced users manage thier computers, they do not let the computer manage them. Vista attempts to manage the user, by managing itself irregardless of the users attempts at making thier own decisions. Lab/speed tests by many various companies/magazines etc, prove that Vista is slower than XP in nearly all things. Further facts that Vista's service pack did not really improve any performance (despite MS's claims), and that XP's service pack 3 actually served to slow it down (Is MS trying to erase/hide the difference for future comparisons?). The biggest computer manufacturers offer downgrade solutions for all thier pc lines as Vista has not been well received. When XP was introduced it was not immediately well received either, however it was picked up alot faster, and eventually found to be a much better more stable OS than its predecessors. Vista on the other hand has been a real rough start, and even a few years after being released it is still not being well received. Microsoft has tried threatening eliminating XP support, but notice how they have not? |

I hear u Zep, bear in mind though, that I am UK, here the bigger outlets for comps had about a 6 month window where u could easily get the comp u want with either , after that u have to customize yer order to get xp, but software is the thing for me, some of my newer hardware is comin in with vista compatability and in that sense I cant fault it yet.
As for pirates I dont think its vista that is makin my sailin slower than it once was, I know its not my graphics cards but I am missing my swoosh as I step on the pirate gas, thats my only issue with technical stuff, otherwise I just like to log in n play non of that computer faffing when I am a pirate. |
