Won't load
I just redownloaded POTCO, I had it on another computer, I just got my Gateway fixed and when I click the POTCO icon it shows it loading for like half a second and then disappears. I restarted the computer and everything.

The only times I have had it "disappear" upon my attempts to launch it, was when my internet connection was failing.
That does not mean this is happening here, but that is the only instance i've witnessed similar occurrence. I always thought the software should say "cannot connect to service" or something instead of just disappearing. |

I would recommend doing the install over a hardwired connection, and at least making sure it works before going wireless.
The popularity of wireless connections is spreading fast. Unfortunately the reliability of them is overrated by most. Its a great networking solution, but not that great for gaming. |

i had so many problems running TT onver wireless despite a excellent connection. After i made a 100 foot cable and ran it halfway around the house to the game pc i hardly ever got disconnected. that's the current setup i have for pirates and hardly ever have connection issues.
if possible try going hardwired for testing. |

Now, I ran my ethernet cable from the router to my computer and my internet won't even pick up, it says the internet is connected and there are no problems but I can't even go to a website. I unplug it and put my wireless adapter in the USB and I can get on. Whats going on?
plus i just downloaded it on my laptop and it is connecting fine, no problems, and its wireless too. Last edited by Dr. Zeppers; 08-05-2008 at 09:40 PM.. Reason: merged consecutive posts |

The fact you have ANYONE arguing against, basically proves its not the best. You wont find any such arguments regarding hardwired connections, at least none leading towards wireless being better. |

Well, I called Linksys and I got everything set up and its working. Only problem I got going now is the game is really lagging, I only played for about 5 minutes. Idk if its just the server I was on or my computer (the other computer I played on didn't lag AT ALL).
Another question, if I played on my laptop wirelessly would the game play be slower, like you were saying. |

When coming into a multi-pirate melee, replete with excessive firebrand or other voodoo staff weapons, both my wireless and wired connections will begin to lag. The key difference is that the wireless connection will flat stall, whereas the wired will still remain playable. Now this is a limited circumstance, and as said before, YMMV. Now, if I can only increase my slow DSL to something a bit better, but that probably wont increase my game playability. See, on my setup, the internet connection itself is the bottleneck. My house wired setup is complete 100Mbit, my wireless is 802.11g running 54Mbit. My DSL is sitting somewhere in the 500kbps range. Verizon is definitely the slow link in my chain. But to get into this in a bit more detail, Lag in the game isn't completely about throughput, its about LATENCY. While both my wired and wireless connections have speeds significantly greater than my DSL rate, the wireless router is a definite source of latency, hence lag in the game. See, the wireless must receive the packets, modulatet the packets to radio, transmit the packets over the radio, receive packets, and demodulate those packets back to standard internet protocol. Collisions, interference, number of users. are all factors in the radio throughput and latency, and the physics of this transfer is the source of lag. The game itself does not send great amounts of data over the internet, as your computer does most of the work of gameplay. Instead, it sends gabillions of tiny packets to update placements, strike directions, etc, etc. etc. over the net, and those small packets are each beset by latency lag. If I were you, I would try a wired connection. Worst case scenario is that it doesn't help, and you haven't changed your situation at all. Best case, you have a much better game experience, and will be much happier for it. Last edited by whiskey; 08-06-2008 at 03:35 PM.. |
