What directx are you using?

I am wondering if basically one platform seems to be working, where others are catching all the lag. Haven't looked into it yet deep enough if xp is actually supporting directx10. As well as the currant video card I am using. So how many are not experiencing lag in svs, and such things with their currant directx?

I dont need to use any of them on my system at home on XP, I suspect it uses the OpenGL which I believe is the native engine.

On my vista laptop, I had used Dx9 setting until a few days ago. Im finding that the Dx10 setting works much better (under Vista).

Direct X is the Microsoft Windows media/3d display engine.

Almost every windows based game requires it for efficient graphics manipulation. Although there are other code sets (such as OpenGL) that are often directly supported by the video hardware, and this may be used instead if the driver for the video hardware also supports it.

For more information you can visit microsofts website.

Maybe I should of given the path to find it.

Go to start, click run, type in dxdiag, click ok.
Bottom of this page should say what directx you are running. If you click display you can test it.

Right now i am using 9c, and getting lag out's, as well as lost internet windows.

What does the "no lag" option on the poll have to do with Direct X version on the system?

You cannot associate the systems version of DX with the lag you experience in the game, at least not unless your game is properly configured, which it will not do by itself regarding DirectX settings.

If your system has Directx 9c, and no OpenGL support, and you have not configured the gameoptions file by hand, the game is using Directx 8 (might lag, but works)

If your system has Directx 10, and no OpenGL support, and you have not configured the gameoptions file by hand, the game is using Directx 8 (might lag, but works)

Everyone on XP should have 9c, the latest for XP.
Everyone on Vista should be on 10, the latest for Vista. (may be an a,b, or c revision)

In my experimentation, and studing of POTCO game logs, it appears that if not designated, and if the game falls back on DirectX (not able to use OpenGL), it will use Dx8 support by default. Many people not using Directx8, this although compatible and working (the reason it defaults to it), may lag.

The reason why adjusting those gameoptions file settings helps sometimes with lag, is because it forces the game to use the native version of DirectX that is on the system instead of dumbing itself down to the 'compatible' older version.

The Dx10 setting makes sense for Vista, as its native Directx is version 10, and soon to be version 11.

The Dx9 setting is likely to be best for XP systems provided it needs it at all. This is because as Poison Elf eluded version 9c is the latest and greatest for Windows XP. I do not know if they will ever release DirectX 10 for XP (if its even possible).

Although using the Dx10 setting with XP would not likely show any improvement, using the Dx9 setting for Vista may help. That would step up the support to at least Dx9. However we are finding now that there IS a Dx10 setting, and that seems to improve things even more for Vista users, as that is the native version for Vista.

The poll is to see what others are using, getting lag, or not . The versions were just easiest to break up that way. What I am interested in, is just directx 10, or vista not getting lag or what?

Unless 10 gets set up for xp, which I have seen what looks like demos. If not there really is nothing else that can be done, to make the lag blocks stop for certain users. Since these things are all display problems that are causing the issues.

If people understood the poll, than it appears more are catching lag of some sort than not. Of course this has variables such as using the panda configurations and such things.

On my dell laptop with Vista home premium, the pandadx9 setting was required to make the game playable, but I still had a few problems.
Since then I have now tried pandadx10, and it has helped me immensely.
I still have to turn things down but not as much, and its much more stable.

When I go to Microsoft with Windows XP to get the lastest version, it gives me 9c everytime.

But no I hadnt tried it once I realized there is no DirectX 10 for XP.

(that i have been able to find)

Couldnt hurt to try it.

I'm running it on a Dell laptop (2GHz (dual core), 2GB RAM, Integrated Intel video chipset that uses shared system memory up to 248MB) with Windows XP Professional & DirectX 9c. My game_options.txt is set to default (not pandadx9) and my graphic options within the game are set on their medium settings. The game looks fairly good and runs great. It gets a little jumpy when there's a ton of people in the same area but it'd take a few dozen ships to do that to me.

The game does run faster (on the seas) if I use the pandadx9 option but looks absolutely horrible. The water looks like massive blue blob. That itself I couldn't stand. However, while on land, the pandadx9 option makes the game rather jumpy.

I've honestly haven't had any problems running the game performance-wise, and my main bottleneck is my cruddy video card.

correct...it IS only supported on Vista but someone has apparently made one that is available for XP...NOT supported but available. I'm afraid to try it myself but wondering if anyone has tinkered with it.

if you google direct x10 for xp there are a couple sites with the download.

i'm always skeptical about these sort of things...if i had another computer to try it on i would...but i don't.

Yea after having read your post about it, made me look harder.

I found similar information, but honestly found not a single valid download.
All the information I found was people trying to play "DirectX10" only games on windows XP.
Sounded like people trying to hack games to me.

Honestly I didnt even know any existed (Directx10 only games).

However at least one site that I read about it on, was debunked as a fake by others on its comments. The pictures given as examples were fakes.
