Is it better to start a pirate with a paid account from the get-go or gain a couple of levels in free play and then upgrade? I know there are statistical benefits to being a paid member, but I was thinking about notoriety points and that it might actually be better to get through the first couple of story points on the black pearl quest unpaid, then as soon as you get the pistol, become a member.

Any thoughts on this?

Well, in the long run... does it make a difference? I do not believe so.

However with a paid account you will accumulate Notoriety/Skill reps quite a bit faster.

I agree with Zeppers that it would make no difference. Unless what you are thinking is that you want to see if the game is worth paying for before paying for it as soon as you start playing. If that's the case, I say you should wait until you get the pistol if you find the game to be worthwhile.
