9-8 Coins?

I didn't get the part with the 9 and 8 coins. Can someone explain it?

i think you mean nine pieces of 8. not sure other than they were a piece of each pirate when they put calypso into human form it kept her bound and were what were used to let her free. each pirate had to be there to let her free. if i remember correctly
