New terms and conditions release 5/6/2008
I read previous but to be honest speed read it cause its all usually the same stuff however since i did notice it coincided with update and was BOLD and in Red i read thru it it appears to me and only my opinion that they have loosened the leash a bit and if i amunderstanding correctly making statement that user account holder is fully liable for such & such about chat/conduct this makes sense, so maybe they have decided to ease up because on the few occasions that i have been able to play in the past 2 days i have had an easier time chatting without the aarrrr and numbers and words that previously could not use , suddenly can |

First post as i just recently discovered this forum.
I agree, i'd like to see some 18 and above servers. Can somebody answer a couple questions for me? A lot of my guild mates can type numbers and names that i can't. For example, a guild member named Blime comes online and other guild members can type "hello Blime" yet i'm not allowed to type Blime. A lot are allowed to say "i just got lvl 24" yet i'm not allowed to type any numbers or even type "thirty". I've also heard about how the + allows you to say more stuff, but i don't have the +, do i have a different interface or something? Is it because i created the account for my 9 year old son, then created my own pirate on his account so i could have unlimited access too? If so, can this be corrected so i'm not so censored? Thanks everyone. Last edited by Redfoote Vader; 05-09-2008 at 12:39 AM.. |

As you said, you created the account with your 9 y/o in play. You have what we call "Child chat" turned on. It limits a lot of what can be said. You might want to check his pirate to make sure you didnt disable his "child chat". Most of us will look for that + sign in a whisper to see if they are a child or adult. No plus, also allows more things to come his way. He will be able to see all local chat!

Thanks Angel.
That's what i figured out, since it is my childs account that has unlimited access, we both always signed in under his name, etc. Now when he plays he continues to sign in under his name (no plus sign for chat). When i play, i sign in under my adult account (basic), then access my pirate on his account (unlimited) and i have the plus sign in my chat. I didn't realize i could do that until yesterday. I now know it was an easy fix and probably a stupid question. |

*OK!* I copied this directly from their new terms of use they updated that Darkscarlet mentioned above...(that was updated in red). it's at the bottom of the main page at Pirates Online. Can't miss it. So what *I* wanna know is what do these two paragraphs mean?!?!?! Does this mean we can actually give out our email addresses now? "at our own risk"?? Or are we gonna get our butts sent to the penelty box like usual??? i wanna know but i don't want to get dropped for 3 days again and get strike #2...lol...i'm a trouble maker enough in reality! i suppose i could meaasage them and just ask them point blank.....hmmm.

The whole "wholesome nature" environment thing bugs me. The movie endorsed violence, raping (Swan and Sao Feng scene), alcohol, gambling, and so much adult material...and I'm sure I'm not the only one disturbed, confused, and perhaps a little amused by big D. I'm not saying kids should not be allowed to play this game since the game (and not the movie) is aimed at a preteen age group...but there should be some allowances given to their adult fans and an adult only server would be a breath of relief...because I don't want to get BANNED for saying "COD ****" even though in the movie Jack Sparrow said just that and a few more choice words.

I am a parent of two girls, both nine. We logon together and sail as a crew. They are sitting right next to me when the spamming of friend requests begins. Drives me absolutely crazy. I'm half tempted to make them create male characters. There are lots of other online options out there if you like MMOs. But I would support having adult servers. Absolutely. So long as I know what they are, we can avoid those easily. The challenge, of course, is identifying the adults. You may think this may be easy (someone suggested that Disney, lol, PHONE CALL every person and verify over the phone that they are an adult). But that's absolutely ridiculous and naive. If you think a teenager can't spoof that, you'll believe anything. Unfortunately, I hate to say this, but the only way this will happen is if Disney agrees to spend lots of money on a special program to certify the age of specific players. And, they need to make sure that an adult account can't simply be logged into by a minor. That part may indeed be impossible. The good news is that the technology and know-how to do this is out there, just in a place you might not think of ... the online porn industry. They are required by law to verify the age of people entering their sites (don't ask me how I know this). I believe they do it by sending a $1.00 charge to a credit card in the registered member's name. Something like that. Anyways, Disney, keep it safe. If I wanted to play an MMO with adults, I'd be playing World of Warcraft still. Thanks, Michael |

My daughter's account is linked to mine and I've turned on the parental controls. This means that she can only say things that are in the list of child approved words (forget what this is called). But my concern was that she would still be able to read what an unrestricted character is saying. Is that true? Or does it filter that for her as well (that'd be great). Also, does anyone know if you can disable friend requests in the parental controls? I'd like to have manual control of that so I can turn it off completely 90% of the time and then only turn it back on when she tells me she has a friend from school or something that she wants to add. That would be great as well. Michael |

I can see both sides of the fence. I myself would like to play on an adult server.
However, creating an adult server is the easy part. The sickos would simply pretend to be a child and log onto their servers. So, the problem of the wierdos is NOT solved by adult servers. Besides there are plenty of ways to circumvent the restrictions if a guild needs to. Believe me the Wenches have. It is called set up a vent server. Since figuring this out I see no reason why the restrictions should be changed or loosened. After all it is for the protection of OUR MOST IMPORTANT ASSET OUR CHILDREN!!!! Yes I am a parent. Sometimes I am glad my daughter cant read yet...... |

To answer your other question. If I say something in local and I dont have the + sign when I type it, she cant hear/see it. If we say it in local and have the plus sign, the chat is restricted to words in the dictionary and she will be able to see/read it. Crew chat and guild chat is different. They can see/read anything even with the + sign gone. (I need to double check on that but I think thats how it is).

If a child makes a seperate account solely for the purpose of getting into adult servers then the parent is not supervising the childerens computer time efficiently. I'm a parent too but my child is 4 years old and his only interest on the computer is on my lap at the Noggin website. I do sympathize with your concerns but there are easy methods to use in order to satisfy both sides of this issue. As for online predators...we deal with them now...we will deal with them on adult servers. The answer is proper supervision and computer gameplay in moderation. Quote:
I for one am not wanting an adult server to condone such "WoW-esque" behavior but instead to offer an environment that feels very restricting to adults....giving out IM names, emails, or any identifying information. Not that I would do this with just anyone online...but perhaps if I persuade one of my longstanding MMO friends I do not wish to feel I must tiptoe around everything which I do not have to do in other MMOs. That being said, the lack of an adult server would not make me leave POTCO...but it sure would be nice! |
