Thanks for all of the information. You hit all the areas I would have had further questions on. I am more familiar with TeamSpeak, but Ventrilo was more highly recommended. I haven't done any real on line gaming since Quake 4 was still new. I used to be in a competitive CTF Quake 3 Clan, and we used TeamSpeak. It had issues. LOL. I guess it's time to get back in the mix and start learning the tweaks again.
Did your community used to have a Q3 server? The name "Old Farts" sounds familiar. |

I don't use it while I play (most of my guild doesn't have it) but Skype is an online talk service that you can use if everyone has a microphone (or headset) that you can plug into you computer. I have used it when recording podcasts, and you can invite many people into a room to chat so it works pretty well. www.skype.com

A couple of friends in my guild use xfire. We had TS, but the push to talk keys would not work in PoTCO. xfire seems to work ok, but we have only recently started with it.
Just another suggestion. |

I setup Ventrilo at home (got The Ban for it too) andit works great. With 5 people conencted and chatting, I experienced no lag on bandwidth (It was running on a secondary PC) and over the course of 2 houts, only 70 Meg of traffic passed to and from the server. You may consider trying it on the POTCO PC, just to see if the server will lag out your gameplay. You can ue dyndns.com to setup an named address to IP address and configure the port rules on your router to allow the Ventrilo traffic to pass through.
It was all very simple to setup and it has great functionality. Unfortunately, if you use vista, you will not be able to use the overlay settings (a popup that shows you who is transmitting, receiving, logging in or out, or many other options you may choose. As a previous post pointed out, the private version limits you to 8 connections (which I quickly realizes is not going to be nearly enough) but hosting solutions are relatively inexpensive and a full list may be obtained from Ventrilo's website. I hope you find a solution that works for you. Good luck in your search. Loot Hard!
