Sailing in Circles
Do you think it would be more interesting and realistic to have the Navy/EITC/Cursed ships sailing from port to port instead of sailing in circles?

(1st Vote)It would be pretty interesring to see ships sailing from port, it might make plundering harder...

I chose Whatever because there should be both.
Granted, those ships need to behave more like ships and not mimic the ones on land. Seeing them go from port to port would be realistic. Pirates would simply disrupt them when they engage them in battle. If none do, then they drop anchor like we would do. Would we see some of those on board offloading at the dock too? No. But I would like that. Would look more realistic. So maybe they might after all. That port to port sailing run would make a nice addition to what we've been use to seeing: ships patrolling the waters in a tight circuit. Doesn't make sense for them to do that anymore ever since POTCO neutered those ships. Those Navy and EITC ships use to shoot at any pirate ship that sailed within their Broadsides' range. Now, they do nothing. Just waiting for the pirates to shoot them first. Unreal. I understand why POTCO did it. So it would be best for these ships patrolling out there to sail a wider circuit instead of the tighter one, let alone the 360 degree spin around they sometimes do.

Honestly, I like the idea of Hunters and SOTL crews chasing us on land. But it won't happen due to how the loading times for various players are different.
The idea is strictly for passive shipping lanes. The ones who fire back at pirates go down sinking. Hunters/ SOTLs will simply disengage once pirates reach port. |

While I would like it if more ships actually had certain routes to follow, some of them should still sail in large circles, like they're on patrol. This would mainly be for Navy ships, and more in certain areas than others.

Part of the problem to me at least is the fact that there is no clear definition between warships and merchant ships. I almost wish there was.
Warships of the era came in all sizes, from very small to very large. They generally had three duties: 1.) Blockading enemy harbours (which doesn’t really apply here.); 2.) Patrolling the sea lanes; and 3.) Convoying the merchant ships from place to place. The larger the ship, the more likely she would be found away from the coastlines. Merchant ships also came in different sizes and shapes, from small coasters with no guns and inefficient gunnery crews, through poorly armed ships with large fighting crews, to well-armed ships with poorly trained crews, to ships like the Dutch and Honourable East India Co's ships which were well armed and well crewed and considered about equal to some of the nations’ warships. The merchant ships, of course, would sail from port to port. Some of the richer ones would be escorted by a warship. Others might be put into convoy and escorted by groups of warships. So to my way of thinking, there should be some kind of distinction between merchant ships and warships. The warships could be patrolling the coastlines or the sea lanes or escorting the more important merchant ships. The merchant ships should be sailing from port to port. You should have to get through the warships to get to the merchant ships – at least the ones carrying reasonably valuable cargos. I would guess that the cursed ships should all be warships, and should be patrolling the sea lanes. None of them should be sailing around in circles. Crimson Rose |
