I'm betting you're running AVG Antivirus right? Currently AVG is identifying the POTCO launcher as an infected file and getting rid of it. It's also preventing reinstallation, even if you've disabled ALL AVG services. The supposed solution is to uninstall AVG (for now) or wait until AVG comes up with a fix (not sure when that'll happen, hopefully in the next day or two). I do NOT recommend uninstalling your antivirus over this! I'm, doing so long enough to test whether this fixes the problem or not and reinstalling. I don't plan on gaming until it IS fixed. |

More to the point, the people at POTCO don't seem to think this is their problem in any way. And they seem somewhat hesitant to make an announcement about this.
Hmm. A MAJOR AV vendor has a problem with your app, spurious or not, and you're NOT going to notify your user-base? Woodruff's Tortugan Freebooters! |

dont blame potco though..avg has had problems with numerous programs/files, there was quite a stir when it broke alot of peoples WOW games.
if youre truly concerned, why not try another av suite? panda, trend micro, norton, etc, and if they still label it as a virus, then we have some headway, but to trust one virus scan as my final arbiter is not something im willing to do, is why i use multiple programs, just like with spyware scanners, nothings perfect, get a second opinion, avg is known for false positivea. Otherwise it's, "Now this darn game don't work AT ALL! What am I paying for?" I think the community is better informed than ignorant. And I think the POTCO crew is better off informing people. Quote:

Multiple spyware products (so long as they're not all active), fine. Multiple AV on a live system? No. |

well it seems to me you are basically saying,
that potco should let the user know about flaws in another program that they have no control over, that dont seem right is all im trying to point out, its not potco but the way avg handles their product, either the way their debugger handles heuristic scanning, i do not know. but the complaints would be better off posted on avg's own forum. i would like to see a sticky or some thing to let people be aware of the issue, but so far i have seen a few (removed) posts about people blatantly bashing potco as if it were a virus/trojan while nothing has been said about an alternative opinion (different product to test the viability of this claim) or considered the problem to stem from avg itself, so thats all i was trying to point out is avg's past history with online games being seen as a trojan, while other scanners correctly identify it as no threat. posting OMG the launcher is a virus/potcos fault/blame, hurts far more than it helps this community, and btw i do not mean you Nathaniel. as for the multiple programs, no i dont run any memory resident scanners, i rely on on demand and regular scans initiated by myself, i learned LONG ago about some bloated suites hogging my cpu cycles and lagging my comp terribly, and their def signature files are left out of the respective others scan zones. |

You come home, and decide it might be a good time to pillage and plunder. *Click* *CLICK* *CLICK CLICK CLICKETY CLICK* "Hey! POTCO doesn't work!" All their other programs work fine. Just POTCO. Keep in mind, they don't know that this is AVG's fault at this point. So they hit the POTCO site looking for info. Nothing. So they try and uninstall and reinstall POTCO. And CAN'T, because AVG is telling them it's virus-infected. The natural reaction is "What the hell is wrong with POTCO?", not "What the hell is wrong with AVG?" A simple announcement like "Currently the AVG Antivirus product is erroneously detecting and disabling the POTCO client. AVG is working on as you read this announcement and hopes to have it fixed soon. -- The POTCO Staff" goes a long way towards deflecting ire, however misplaced from themselves. Simple CYA. Again, this isn't POTCO'S fault. I understand this. However, the average user won't. ESPECIALLY when POTCO doesn't TELL them it isn't POTCO's fault. I've used several other apps that have, at times, fallen foul of a bad virus scanner definition. The developers ALWAYS took the time to note the issue, if only to deflect blame, once notified. Quote:
My issue is with POTCO's "not my problem" attitude. The fact is, if it affects their product it IS their problem. And the appropriate response is to notify your userbase of the situation so they don't show up on your doorstep with tar and feathers. Quote:
