Who's driving?

Sometimes when sailing I get kicked off the wheel. It has happened when sailing alone or with a crew. It can take a couple of minutes to regain control--annoying when you are in the process of sinking a target. I've tried drawing a weapon, walking around, escape key. Nothing is guaranteed to work so far.

Any ideas or suggestions?

What happens when u get kicked off the wheel? Sometimes when I have tagged a flag, and the time runs out on it, the "invincibility" runs out. I get kicked off the wheel. I just have to back up, and run back to the wheel when I see the green circle around it. Not sure if thats the same as with u?

yup if it is your ship and u get kicked it means u disabled a flag ship and the flag ship has just sunk just walk back a yard then walk upo and hit SHIFT if it is not your ship then maybe the owner came and kicked u off the wheel

I don't think that those are what's happening to me. I don't shoot at flags when sailing alone, and even if I hit one somehow, I'm not getting the boarding message.

Same thing happens to me. Im sailing and all of a sudden the sails fold up and Im viewing the back of my characters head. I just back up a few steps and then go forward, press Shift and go back to sailing. However, during battle, it really is annoying.

Aye, it happens to me whether I've tagged/disabled a flagship or not. Just this morning, in fact, I was kicked off the helm as I was approaching a Phantom and I hadn't gone anywhere near a flag. I haven't been able to discern any pattern to it, so have no idea how to prevent it from happening.

Although it takes only a few seconds to step away and back, I've had any number of close calls because of this quirk. So far, I've avoided sinking -- though yesterday I just managed to regain the wheel as a Kingfisher was firing at me. Thank goodness for "Ramming Speed"!

I've actually timed this while doing the man overboard glitch. I was on the ship as it was going down (sank without grapple) and down I went with it. Never had it happen to a non-flag. As soon as the ship disappeared under water and under the ground below that, is when you will get knocked off the wheel. There is no way to stop it. We even tried leaving the wheel and going back, but you still bounce from the wheel when the ship is removed from the game. Either way, as the other posts pointed out, all you need to do is stem back a ways and go forward again. Normally about 3 steps back does it for me.

Yes i can backup, reapproach wheel and regain control..
But in the example given... full sail skill wasted, and im usually sunk.

I run to a cannon if I can't instantly re-access the wheel. I don't access the cannon: I instantly go bak to the wheel. This is what I do only if I can't go back to the wheel instantly.

That happens to me. For some reason, I draw my weapon (rather the game does for me), and I get kicked off the wheel.

Yeah, wasted skills suck, luckily, I usually try to keep ramming spare just for them moments.

The bug does seem to happen randomly also, and as everyone else has said, it seems all you have to do is run away until the circle has gone from the wheel, and then walk back and you can grab it.

Yeah - this bug is getting real annoying. A waste of a skill that takes a few minutes to reload. I can't figure any reason for this either. totally random and any of my ships.

Yea, I've found this happens when I'm really pushing myself, for instance:

I'm on my ship, I've snuck up behind something, broad sided it, run over to hit it w/ my cannons before it manuvers into firing position on me. I fire of 3 or so shots, run back to my wheel, hit shift + forward (to sail forward) and bounce! Too much for my boat, back up get back on, delay between getting to wheel and hitting forward . . . then I can take off . . . while getting broadsided cause of the time waste. Oh well, I still win normally, game just needs to catch up to my elite speed!
