I have a suggestion...

This popped into my mind as I was thinking of a thread I'd recently posted. It's still just a little baby idea, it hasn't grown up yet... :P

When posting a thread or posting on a thread, there could be a bar under Additional Options where you can type in names, or names separated by a comma. Names of people that you allow to edit your post (as well as mods, of course). For example, if you're submitting a thread about your guild, you could type in the name(s) of your Co GM(s) so they can edit the thread as well. For another example, you might have had an adventure with another forum user that you'd like to post. You might want to let them be able to edit your post in case you've missed something they'd like to add, or something else.

Now I need your feedback.

Sounds like the start of a good idea....just needs some polishing. Then the final product will need MOD approval to be implemented.

Thank you for the suggestion. We've had similar suggestions either here or on one of our other sites. I can see where this might be helpful in certain situations such as running a guild, co-working on a guide together, and a few other types of threads. Unfortunately, the software we use presently doesn't allow for non-mods to edit other people's posts. This is pretty hard coded into the programming to the point I believe it'd be a programmers nightmare to alter it enough to make it user-friendly for those situations.

As the case of buying any precreated software that isn't created specificly for your needs, there are always cons and pros. Since I rarely have time to alter much of the coding or take the time to create my own hacks, I end up relying on hacks and plugins for the software that other people have created. I do take the time to occasionally browse thru the list of new hacks and plugins to be able to add new features to the site.

In the case of guild threads, if the GM has disappeared for a long enough period from the site, we could allow someone else to obtain OP status of the thread by changing the person who created the thread. This would effectly, allow someone else to take over a guild's thread. NOT something we'd do lightly but it is possible.

Or, I know this sounds crude but, make a guild user. I don't know if that is allowed, but it could work. Then you could have anybody part of the GM's in a guild change it. Only problem I see is that either when a GM steps down, he still has info on how to get in, which is when you change the password. The main problem would be if you try to get on while somebody else is on. Who knows how to solve that. Just an idea though..

Could you explain a bit more of what you're suggesting?

Such as the guild decides to make a user for everybody or a certain people (Such as GM's). These people are then given the password to get in, which means if somebody forgets something and somebody else remembers, that other person can log in and change it.
EXAMPLE

Guild: (Just making an example) Bob's guild..

Guild Masters: Bob, Joe, Frank, Eddie.

They create a guild account

Eddie writes plans for guild on thread:

Eddie: Today we will invade (Doesn't finish)

Bob sees and changes post to:

Today we will invade Port Royal!

Thats it I guess. If you still don't understand, I don't know how to make it more clear.

Also, you would have to be able to trust everyone you gave the account to fully, or they could change the password, make mean posts, and other things that could get them kicked out of the guild but won't because nobody knows who it is. It's probably possible though if everyone trusts eachother.

As I stated previously, our present software doesn't allow for such things. Though not a bad idea and could be used in certain situations. The creators of vB feels that no one should be able to edit other people's posts except for moderators. Trying to code around this would be a nightmare.
