Savvy Swashbucklers! - June 8, 2011

Whether fearlessly risking it all to rescue captured GMs, or selflessly healing injured friends while dodging La Schafe’s cutlass aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, many Pirates prove their worth every day in the Caribbean.
It’s time once again to spotlight a single Pirate who deserves our highest recognition for being one of the Savviest Swashbucklers in the Caribbean!

From June 8 to June 24, we want to honor a special Pirate who aids others, shows great bravery, and relies on rascally wit in the face of menacing foes, all while keeping to the Pirate Code. If you know a Pirate who fits this description, let us know by replying to this News Item using the comment field below only.

The nominee most uniquely true to the Pirate spirit will be recognized as being the savviest Pirate in the Caribbean – a true Savvy Swashbuckler!

When you reply with your nomination, please include the following information:

• Name and level of the Pirate you are nominating
• The Guild in which the Pirate is a member
• Reason why you think the Pirate deserves this honor. Tell us their tale! We want to hear what makes this Pirate a true Savvy Swashbuckler!
• Which island can we find this Pirate on… if we want to go sailing with him or her.

Entries will only be accepted through replies to this News Item, so make sure you send in your nomination by replying using the comment field below.
Put the spotlight on a deserving Pirate today!

I've always had an opinion against this event.

While it is nice that they are trying to recognize pirates in the Caribbean, I DISLIKE the fact that it's more than likely going to go to the wrong person. I know that when they've done this in the past, people who don't necessarily deserve it got close to winning (or even won) because they got all their friends to vote for them. Along with this, you have to remember a majority of all the good-hearted pirates in the Caribbean are unsung heroes in the fact they don't have huge amounts of people to vote for them.

Regardless, I'll be voting for a pirate I believe has made a difference in the Caribbean in a positive way. And I just hope that whoever wins deserves it not because they are popular, or are from a large guild, but because they have done good through the kindness of their heart.

I agree with Del, it's sorta been a popularity contest before, and some Gm's make their guild to vote for them.

But didn't you used to E-Mail them your nominations before... so it's private, rather than public?

I'm willing to bet that they didn't do it through email this time so that people can't use multiple emails to send in the same votes. With the comments, it's easier to track where it all comes from, and maybe if there's a dual IP, they can say "Okay, this comment is null-in-void."

But imagine how much of a pain it would be to do that though! Checking who wrote every comment and checking the IP? I would rather be a customer service guy.

lol I kinda agree.

I also agree with Del. Couldn't people cheat in other ways too, like vote for their own pirate but vote using a different pirate? not much of a setup for VOTING. *sigh* Well at least i've got some rum.

I'll definitely vote for someone (its a secret. ), but I do agree with the others. The winners usually do end up being guildmasters of massive guilds, so its not exactly fair. Again, more of a popularity contest than who is actually a good pirate. In my opinion, just because you win, doesn't make you some sort of great pirate. Just means that you have a lot of people who voted for you, again usually due to a massive guild.

Well, we are pirates, aren't we? We're pretty much doing our status proud by gaming the system.

More on-topic, I'm very apathetic about this. I think this is just used to buy the developers extra time for creating new content.

I've always disliked that argument. "Because we're pirates." Sure, our characters are pirates in the game, but not the real players. I mean, if we all used the "We're pirates" excuse, I'd probably be out plundering, pillaging, and torturing some innocent townsfolk. As the player, in my opinion, we shouldn't be trying to take advantage of the system. It's dishonorable, you could say.

I'm not overly fond of the pointless competition either. It's buying them time by telling us to "vote for the best pirate", but the Caribbean is so scattered with various players that it's insanely difficult to garner votes for anyone without, as you say it, gaming the system. It's a nice little paradox we have here.

I actually think what their doing is trying to promote a community atmosphere for everybody. Crew days, server removals, and now this. If people didn't get together, than the jerks like the one Davy encountered would continue to be jerks, and not meet somebody who changes their mind.
In other words: They are trying to decrease the amount of jerks in the game by promoting a more of a community type feel.
its not working, but at least POTCO seems to have a good intention.

Keep in mind that this is a role-playing game. We ARE supposed to role-play as dishonorable people who ravage the Caribbean. And I'm not too sure what you mean by this:

Last I checked, all of us do this (maybe more to the Navy, EITC, and monsters than anything else, but I digress).

I meant in real life terms, mate. I understand that it's role playing, however, that role playing doesn't carry over to our decisions made outside of being a pirate.

My point was that while we are pirates, we as moral people shouldn't stoop as to abuse a system meant to recognize somebody for their good deeds. You need to stop thinking from so much as a standpoint in the game, as to viewing it as the person behind the screen.

After all, if I really was a pirate, I would have more-or-less staged a desertation of my guild on an uninhabitated island and left with all the rum to myself - and as tempting as this metaphorical example is, it wouldn't be right to set my enjoyment in front of that of others simply because "I'm a pirate."

My final point being, doing the right thing, mates. Don't vote for somebody because they ask/demand you too, or because they're your friend. Stand up for the unsung heroes in the Caribbean, by finding the pirate you know rightfully deserves some recognition and thanks long overdue.
