I need a helmsman(I'm trying to lv up my cannon skills)
I'm a slaming helmsman myself, but that does little good if you be trying to lv up your cannons.
They should really have an outpost in game where people can sign up for a crew, and the captain can just select people from the list(the current system sucks). I have a Light Frigate, and need a good helmsman(that knows how to menuever a ship), so I can gain some cannon levels(Iwant those Firebrand, and Thunderstorms, so I can raise hell on the high seas), can someone help me out? I personally leveled my cannons up by myself, becasue I dont normally go to a friends ship, they ussually come to me. I just shoot a ship in the distance with my cannon, and just shoot them as they come closer. If they get to close, then I'll just run to the wheel and use Sail to get some distance and start all over again. My cannon is Lv 12. Thats the level you need to get the Lightning Shot.

It's a lot of fun to crew with someone else, but if you can't find anyone, you can level them up solo.
Just find a fat juicy target, park your ship out of range, and then plink at it with the cannon. You can hit things that don't appear on the compass when it's in full zoom-out. A little practice will teach you how far out your range is. Lift the cannon up to shoot farther, down for closer. I find that when they're just outside the radar is the optimum. If you tag the ship, it will stop, turn toward you, and come over to say hi. If it's pointing away from you when you hit it, it has turn around, and you gain even more time. Just keep shooting. It won't turn and fire until it's really close. A lot of the shots will hit the sails. Since they're coming right at you, hitting the mast is pretty easy. You can either knock the masts off and then shoot them at leisure, or move a bit down and to the side to hit the hull. Since moving the cannon up/down changes the distance, and you can't see where your cannonballs are landing because the cannons in the way, you'll need to move the cannon out of the way. Move it sideways out of the way, not down. This keeps you from losing the proper elevation. Once you see the health bar dropping, just fire away. You'll have to adjust the elevation a bit as the ship gets closer. Again, practice will help. Do it right, and you'll be dropping galleons and frigates without taking a hit. Be careful of the sloops. They're fast and small enough that you can't always sink them before they start firing. One fireball broadside can really ruin your day. |

I do the same as Crazy Guy. I've been loving the spot off the coasts of Tortuga and Cangrejos. Kingfishers, Man o Wars, Ogres, Monarchs, Revenants and Storm Reapers hang out in this area. I scout a nice spot for the closest one, fire at it in the distance to get its attention, and while its sailing towards me I just keep nailing it. I only use Round Shot, nothing else.
Pretty much every ship gives me at least 100 rep, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less, also with the occasional Royal Chest(s). I leveled my cannons from 12 to 17 over the weekend. Although a few times I let them get close, nearly destroyed, and nail them with broadsides just to even things out. But I've rarely had to port before I was full 9/9 on cargo. Once I'm done with one ship, I'll readjust for the next. If something goes wrong, I have always been able to rush back to one of the two islands and regroup. I do have a regular Frigate however so it will handle a little more damage than a Light Frigate. But like CG said, if they get too close before I've taken them down I'll just move my ship real quick or, again, take them out real quick with broadsides. I've only ever truly sailed with one person, unfortunately he stopped getting on under the name I know. I've played every bit of this game by myself other than going out with him at least once a night for an hour or so.

I'm in the same boat (no pun intended). My sailing is good, but I desperately need cannon time.

Another good place to solo your cannon skills is Padres del Fuego. Board your ship, sail out just a hair, and have at it. You can polish most of them off before they fire a single shot, and if you get in trouble, you're right there at port.
