A Reminder About Being Safe In-game
With new Pirates coming to the Caribbean every day, it's always good to know how to keep yourself safe in the game. Here's a reminder about keeping your personal information safe while having a great time in Pirates of the Caribbean Online.
* Never reveal any of your personal information. Also never ask another Pirate for their personal information. This includes: o Account ID/ Password o E-mail Address o Home Address o Phone Number NOTE: Disney GMs will never ask for your personal information in the game. Remember, Pirates of all ages sail these waters. Let's all help in making the Caribbean a safe and welcoming place for everyone by keeping to the code! |

See, disney is soooo paranoid about this yet there is no one in game searching for "victims" or anything like that....that kind of thing doesn't happen in potco, so get rid of plus chat and stop being so silly.

Can they just release the Savvy Swashbucklers results already? Interested on the outcome.

There are predators in potco just like there are in all social venues. Potco actually is a feeding ground for the kind that prey on kids. There is a security division set up by Disney just for handling them. However, it is so rampant I don't believe they can do enough. Kids need to be protected. Reminding them is important. In an off site guild website I was in..some officers were made super moderators. This gave them access to things like our email addresses and ip addresses. Those can be searched for home addresses. After we found one of members(an officer), to be a convicted kid predator, I left that site. Its better to be safe than sorry. And, yeah, that kind of thing does happen in potco. |

Thank you Disney!
I've had numerous instances where I've forced myself to stop something from happening. A specific time I remember quite well - I had just logged on, and was running down the Tortuga beach when I heard somebody ask another player "Hey, can I have your number?", or something along those lines. The other pirate (most likely younger, because he was a low level basic and had a hard time spelling) said "sure ok." Before I ran off in to town to go stock up on my potions, I immediately got involved, and told the bugger to back off. After the guy left, I apologized to the kid for having to reprimand him for almost giving away PI - yet I was shocked beyond the fact to find out that the poor mate didn't know who the guy who approached him was. Regardless, anything can happen on the internet. If anything, this game would be a MAJOR target for predators, considering the fact that there is such a large population of youth. There are countless people that say "Oh, that can't happen to me!"..... Don't you think those that it happened to were thinking the same thing? We should all be grateful our game is run by such a company that routinely reminds us to keep ourselves, our mates, and everybody else safe. |

Another post thats spot on Del! I've also seen this occur in Potco as well as having young players approach me telling me of similar instances and asking for instructions on how to report such behavior. I've also witnessed attempts to phish account info from players in game attempting to get player login details. This is an area where I'm glad that Disney keeps a watchful eye in protecting the younger players.
I've been a game moderater on a non Disney game site and I think I can say that this sort of thing happens in all online games. Predators, Phishers, Scammers, etc... Our game chat on that other site was not filtered as it is on Potco and I've seen young players post their phone numbers and home addresses as well as their emails in public chat. I've also busted a few predators on that other game. In these online games you never know who is on the other end of that avatar, could be a 6 year old or an 80 year old and they may not be a very nice person. Not only is it the duty of the Mods in game but also the duty of us adult players to try to keep the kids safe. and report inappropriate behavior. |

There are adults playing the game aswell as POF (which they can also be a good influence!) . Looks like Disney does not want to be sued incase something happens to someone.

Whenever somebody asks me a personal question, I don't even respond. I just pretend like I didn't hear it and I continue my life. I suggest you all do the same, it's a pretty good way. You can't get banned for ignoring that question, and you can report them.

Its good you know to ignore them....young kids might not. I saw a four year old in game last nite...son of a guild member playing on his open chat pirate...while he played another pirate at same time...and yes I preached to him a bit. If he was disconnected, that little kid could be a target. Lots of very very young kids in game.
I wonder why so many protest against something that can save lives??? LOL, Monkeys, YOU CAN IGNORE THE SAFETY REMINDERS FROM DISNEY!!...

Mates, if you are an officer or Guild Master, part of your duties should include watching after your younger members and warn them of this stuff.
As much as one may not like going to Tortuga Abassa, it's the social hub. Check up on your members that frequent it when you can and make note of any pirate whose appears to be trolling. Disney can only do so much and they are doing just about everything they can without making the game unenjoyable. We all can be pro-active. |

I have played every single Disney game at some point or another.
The worst for this, I have seen, is frankly Toontown. Then comes Pirates. VMK wasn't actually too bad, and Club Penguin has very little or none of this. And they have an extremely open chat. Pixie Hollow has... other issues than this. I'm glad they remind players of this. Occasionally someone will ask me what my real name is. I usually just ignore them, teleport to a new server, and report them before I leave. NEVER tell ANYONE your last name. In fact, you can be giving out more information than you realize. Here is an extremely good thread on this topic on Toontown Central. The information is originally for Toontown, but it can be applied here. |
