As far back as I can remember, they have always called us guests.

In Disney policies there is no such thing as costumers. They call them "Guests" because you are visiting their world. So, they are supposed to treat everyone like guests. A costumer is there to complete an informal transaction while a guest is supposedly treated with the highest possible respect and is more than welcomed.
