Might seem like a simple question but I saw a gold coin sign next to some pirates' names. What does this mean?

That means that they are a founder. They were here when the game was still in beta stages or in the first month or so of the game I think, and have been paying for unlimited ever since. You'll find a few of them around here on the forums.

As Crestshot said, they are the players that have upgraded to unlimited at the time POTCO was beginning. However, I don't think it was also for beta players. If they go basic, they pay again, they're founder
