The REAL Tortuga!!
Just in case you didn't know it, there was a real Tortuga in the Caribbean.
In 1503, on his last trip to the "New World", Christopher Columbus discovered a small group of 3 islands. They were totally wild, and literally covered in turtles. He claimed these islands for Spain, and called them Los Tortugas. Today they are part of the British West Indies, (BWI), and are the islands of the Caymans. Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac. They sit straight south of Cuba, about an hour and a half flight from Miami. ![]()

Just to clarify, the Tortuga off of Haiti didn't get that name until the 1600's. The 3 islands that make up the Cayman's were named Los Tortugas in 1503. So, the ORIGINAL Tortuga in the Caribbean, was what is now known as the Caymans. As I said in my OP, this is the REAL Tortuga.
There are many other places also called Tortuga: As Bart mentioned, the Dry Tortugas to the west of Key West, The small island at the north end of Haiti Isla Tortuga off of Baja California Sur Venezuela and Peru both also have islands named Tortuga

Thank you, Basil for the interesting thread. Great photos! Kinna remind me of tourist attractions in Fla & on the east coast. They (whoever They are) say "Knowledge is Power" & that "You learn something new Everyday". I learned something new today.
Hmmm...does that make me pirate stronger? Let me check-/flex Well, didn't give me bigger biceps, but certainly was great for me brain muscles!

I have one of the empty boxes sitting on me cubical wall right now (wish it was full). Me wife and I spent our honeymoon on Grand Cayman and I highly recommend it. Would love to go back some day and see it again. There still be turtles there as they have a Sea Turtle farm you can visit. Captain Whale |
