Tired of ships attacking

I have to sink ships for a quest. But the thing I hate is when the ships I DON'T need start attacking. I think if you hit first they have the right to hit you. Anyone else agree? I'm tired of paying 49 gold for my ship when I had a Marauder, a Death Omen, and a Monarch on me.

An enemy ship, is an enemy ship, and your a pirate!!!
When in range, they should be firing or running!

Here we have a Navy ship whose job it is to clear the seas of pirates.......

Navy Lookout: Ahoy Captain! Pirate ship on the horizon fighting another ship, and heading into firing range!! Shall we bring her about to attack?
Navy Captain: Nah, lets see if they attack us first, it's tea time.

Things probably wouldnt go like that....

As a matter of fact, it would INCREASE the likelihood of them attacking because they have you outnumbered/gunned.

One of the many skills in sailing in the game is not only sinking the ships you want, but avoiding those you do not wish to engage.

No idea is a bad one... However I just dont think this one 'works'

I know that wouldn't happen. But, if a pirate is not attacking you, then why bother. Its the other person they are attacking, so why risk getting another ship sunk? Just saying, its another 49 gold for my frigate being sunk. I'm gonna be going to jail soon if I can't pay my taxes for my ship XD. Im just REALLY tired of being ganged up on by a Death Omen, a Marauder, and a Monarch at the same time. That really helps me going on their side, by sinking me XD.

Hang in there Angel, it can be frustrating for sure. Try to get with some mates to help you, or keep sinking smaller ships to level up first. You will reach the point of being able to deal with any ships firing at you. Also, running on a busy server on an open boarding pirate ship will help with your gold concerns as well.

Don't have much need for gold, but I have wasted over about 300 bucks in a day from repairs.

Zep hit it on the head, you are a Pirate, they are the enemy, they will sink you given the chance. Your job is to not give them that chance.

I think what you need Angel is a better strategy for sinking the ships you need. Don't try to sink one that has 3 other enemy ships close to it, or sink those enemy ships one at a time so the one ship you need is all alone. You can also shoot the one you need once and then drive your ship to safer waters, as long as you don't go too far the tagged ship will follow you. You can get close to the ship you need, get off the helm and fire a cannon shot into the ship you need, that will bring it away from the others.

I see too many pirate ships just barge right in the middle of several higher level ships and then wonder why they get sunk. There is a "circle of influence" around all ships, if you enter that area you will be fired on, you need to determine how close you can get before you enter that zone. Just takes practice and paying attention to those details, you'll be a master sailor in no time at all!

I spent about a week or so strictly sailing recently - mostly as a break from weapons leveling. It was the first time that I got in the habit of opening up the crew to public, and I really liked the result. For the most part, it attracted pirates who were interested in (a) gold, and (b) leveling their cannon.

Sure, there were a few who just wanted to drive the big ship.

So, I would recommend that you try that route to provide yourself with the benefit of additional gunners. If all the cannons are firing, you shouldn't have too much trouble with the extra attention!

Another tip that seems to be often ignored: sail with your compass. If you zoom in as far as possible, then you can only get within a half of the radius distance before a ship will engage (rule of thumb only, not scientifically evaluated). Line of sight sailing is too unreliable. Engage the enemy before it engages you.

For the record - I am all for the premise that as a pirate, you're a live target for any ship.

There are some good recommendations here, I usually use most of them, except the big crew. For my advantage in sailing, I always try to be the fastest, most maneuverable ship there, even when sailing my Gallon O'War. To do this, I Max Windcatcher, and keep at least 3 points in tracking and Full sail. But It's not all about dodging attacks, for me, it immense firepower. For that, I Maxed Round Shot, Barrage, and both my broadsides, trust me, this will make the damage of your broadsides to the 7th power, you become almost invincible with it, doing 1,100+ damage per broadside shot. It's so powerful that you can sink a Ogre with open fire in 1 broadside of a Sloop O'war. I would also recommend taking some to get used to dodging attacks from ships, just stop when they fire of use Come About.

Hope this helps,

Nuju-
