Post Molly Blue and the Eyeball

On a wilde Caribbean island, in a cavern near the shore
Reside the shipmates of olde Davy Jones, of cursed Pyrate lore.

Inside the bedeviled grotto his crew spend all their tyme
Holystoning the wrecks of ships whilst reflecting on their crime.

On a cold December day a Brig come by, a bone within her teeth,
And hove-to when they caught sight of the island beyond the reef.

Aloft, young Linden cried to all, “She’s got plants and beach and water!”
“Ye’d best be right!” cried Molly Blue, “Or ye’ll be kissing the gunner’s daughter!”

The Captain thought that he might actually have landed here before.
So he ordered two, and only two, of his Krewe to go ashore.

Sam Dreadgull and Molly Blue were the ones up for the task,
And lowered the longboat abaft the beam, then pulled from Lizzy’s flask.

Dutch courage was something neither needed; not why they took the swig,
But rather for concern they would soon dance the hempen jig.

For somethin’ were wrong, they both could feel ‘fore rowing to the shore
And both could sense a heaviness they hadn’t felt before.

They knew the brig was low on water; explorin’ was not their duty.
But when they saw the cave they both imagined tonnes of booty!

Could it be inside were buried chests? Gold and dubloons the bait;
The Captain were a generous one; one full share for each mate!

They stepped inside and drew a breath; a pong attacked their senses.
The two drew their cutlasses forthwith to ensure they had defences.

They squinted hard; eventually their eyes adjusted to the gloom
And there they saw that they were in a great cavern room.

Shipwrecks were strewn about the cave and that was not the worst.
Within the cavern they saw the crew—Jack Tars that be cursed!

Unnoticed they had hoped they were, and tried to take French leave
But Molly was careless and as she turned snagged a rock upon her sleeve.

The sound was gentle, not much to hear, just a gentle ripping noise.
But that was enough to alert two of Davy Jones’ boys.

The Kelpbrain hissed “Ye’ll both be serving time before the mast!”
And then the Dregs made his move and threw a dagger lightning fast.

Molly was quick to dodge the dart, but Sam fared not as well
And leaving Molly to defeat the brace, Sam slowly fell.

But Molly were no slack with a blade, oh no—of this there were no doubt
And she gutted the Dregs from crotch to sternum as if he were a trout.

She turned to face the Kelpbrain, who looked at his mate who’d been slain.
“Scupper that!” Molly said to him and clove him nary in twain!

She wiped her sword upon his rags and sheathed it without a word.
She knealt down beside her fallen Sam, her vision slightly blurred.

He were alive, but barely so, and this had caused her tears
For she and Sam had been shipmates for nigh on seven years!

What happened next was hard to believe; she viewed his injury
And pulled her knife and stuck it where his eyeball used to be!

She plucked it out! His EYE she pulled, and hanging from its socket
She clipped it off with a deft slice and stuck it in her pocket!

Then next she bent down over him and calm as she could be
She put her mouth to the place his eye had used to be!

She dragged him back out of the cave and got him in the dinghy
But kept thinking of the souvenir in her pocket, that bloody little thingy!

When back aboard they patched him up and soon he was right as could be
Except for the patch that were where his eyeball used to see.

Molly took her trophy from its place within her pocket
And she wore that shriveled eye around her neck as a locket.

Now what transpired inside the cave the Krewe all wanted to hear
But Molly could not speak of it without shedding a tear.

So mates, I’ll tell ye all today of why Sam had lost his eye.
And why it was that Molly wears that thingy that makes her cry.

Ye see, Sam were hit by a dagger what had been poisoned and struck true.
And he were hit in the eye, and Molly knew what to do.

Sam’s eye were ruined—there were no way she could be saving it
And it were offensive to view for it were a sin they did commit.

All she could think was, “If thine eye offends thee, pluck it out!”
And took the passage literally though she were not devout.

But because she pulled the eye loose she discovered there was more
And saw the blade coated with venom upon the cavern floor.

Again she knew what she must do and sucked the poison out
A truer and more loyal Krewe mate one could not do without!

She saved Sam’s life by pulling his eye, but wears it to remember
Of the time inside Tormenta Cavern on that cold day in December.

To aid ye in yer understandin':
  • Holystone - bars of sandstone used to scrub a ship's decking. To scrub so was "holystoning."
  • Brig- a vessel with two square rigged masts (fore and main). The main mast of a brig is the aft one. To improve maneuverability, the mainmast carries a fore-and-aft sail (also called a spanker).
  • Bone in her teeth - description indicating a ship traveling at considerable speed, fast enough to raise a white wake at her bow. "Aye, she was sailin' with a bone in her teeth."
  • Heave-to - to stop a ship and maintain position, using rudder and sails to prevent much movement or drift. Also phrased as Lie-to. A ship thus stopped is Hove-to.
  • Aloft - to be or go up into the rigging or on the mast, above the deck.
  • Kissing the gunner's daughter - to be tied over one of the ship's cannons and flogged. "They caught him stealing, and now he's going to kiss the gunner's daugher."
  • Abaft the beam - towards the rear somewhere between beside and behind the ship; between a 6 o'clock 9 o'clock position.
  • Dutch courage - false courage usually inspired by strong drink. "Oh, he was full of Dutch courage, he was."
  • Dance the hempen jig - to be hanged by the neck until dead. "If he's caught, they'll make him dance the hempen jig." Reference is to ropes made of hemp.
  • Pong - a powerful smell.
  • Jack Tar - a common sailor. Also simply "Tar."
  • French leave - to leave the ship without permission, such as to go get drunk ashore. Also any sneaky exit.
  • Before the Mast - refers to the quarters of the common sailors — in the forecastle, in the front of the ship.
  • Scupper that - a term of derision meaning "that's hogwash." Scuppers are properly small openings at the edges of the deck which allow water to wash back over the side.
