PirateAhoy's Mini-Guide to Sailing!
Someone gave me this idea, to create a mini-guide, so I think I'll try one. Let me know how you all like it.
Sailing for levels 1-5 in 5 steps 1. You've just started off on your pirate journey. Be sure to get your ship, get your pistol, and see Jack for your newest story chapter quest. 2. Push 1 to fire your left broadside, 2 to fire your right broadside. Aim your ship sideways to your target (Navy Ferret or Bulwark for now), then press 2 if it's on your right, 1 if it's on your left. You can hold down the right mouse button to change the camera angle and see your line-up better. 3. After you sink a Ferret or Bulwark, go to either Port Royal or Tortuga and Drop Anchor. You should get about 20 coins on average. Keep sinking, even get a crew, until you have 800 coins. 4. Go to the shipwright and Purchase a Light Frigate. Get 2 crew to fire the cannons on your ship and set sail. You now can defeat 2-3 ship at a time. Try your luck at EITC Sea Viper's, Navy Panther's, Navy Greyhound's, Navy Ferret's, and Navy Bulwark's. 5. Once your ship's Hull Health Meter is in yellow, head back to Tortuga or Port Royal and Drop Anchor. Keep doing this, get your sailing level to 5, and see if you can earn the 4,000 coins necessary for a Galleon. Have fun in PotCO, and please leave some feedback if you like my Mini-guide idea. Happy sinking!

Thanks Pirate! I could use this if I create a new character.

How to win those big ships with a light sloop...
The first ship you get is the light sloop. It seems like a wimp but if used correctly it is a powerful warship.
The key is to use your speed to stay to the aft (back end) of the NPC ships. Few ships in the game can fire to the aft. Sail your light sloop so your broadside guns are pointing at the aft of the ship you are fighting. I call this crossing the "T" and so did the sailors of the day. Fire your broadside guns. This does the most damage since hitting the back of a ship does extra damage. Hop onto the cannon that points to your opponent and fire away until you sink him or you see that he is starting to turn at you. If he tries to turn his guns at you just "Cross the T" again and repeat. Try to get as close to his backside as you can when performing this maneuver. I have taken out level 24 ships with a character with just level 4 sailing using this method. It took about 10 min but it was fun. With a little practice you can take out level 10s at will. Obviously if you are attacked by more than one ship you should run away. The light sloop can not easily take on more than one ship at a time. -Eldrid Long Legs |
