They just want to up their friend count. It's a game to them. Or they are shy and are waiting on the other person to make the first move.

Some just friend you for the benefit..

For example, if you have a war galleon and they don't.. they will use you for your ship..
If your on an island they need and they don't have tp access to, they will use you as a tp totem..

And some, as Maria said.. just care about the numbers...

In the end, just stick to befriending the pirates you've spent sometime with and have gotten to know.. not the run-by invites...

As stated before, many people WILL try to friend you just to seem cool, (normally this happens a lot with higher levels, Founders, top rankers, etc.). Sometimes said people will beg and beg to be your friend and if you say yes, they'll most likely treat you badly by either using you or just talking smack about you. It's usually a person acting immature, some kid trying to seem cool, or some possible stalker...
What people do BEFORE you friend them determines whether they're real or fake. That's why I like to get to know people before I friend them, to avoid that problem.

I accept two kinds of friend invites:

People I have quested/leveled with that were friendly
People from guilds I have been in

I never accept run by friend requests. I always think back to that scene in Mrs. Doubtfire "It was a run by fruiting.".

I don't want to accept a friend request if I don't know the type of player they may be.

This is precisely why I said before and will say again, that we need an option to turn off friend requests in game. It would be nice to have that option for guild invites as well but I just did as was suggested to me and made my own guild.

There is no solution to random friend or crew invites, however.

Basically if someone asks to be your friend and your a Level 30 or higher you should say no because most times it's a noob who's just going to tell his/her noob friends that they have a 40 on their list and that they should be jealous of them.

The logical thing to do would be just friend people you know and intend to talk to/play with in the future.

Arrow My advice...

I have found most people who will randomly add you as a friend just want to use you for their own gain later... Now we are pirates, and that does happen from time to time in the life of a pirate, but.... It is generally a good idea to only add people who you know, and have played the game with together at some point.

Once you have a giant friends list of random people, you will have people teleporting to you at the worst times.

1.) When you are sailing, they will teleport onto your ship while you are just sailing from one island to another, then fire on a Juggy, and it will sink you while you are just trying to complete a simple quest.

2.) You can be leveling, and bam there they are, taking all your rep. -or- They will attract a large enemy you cant defeat, and it will take you and them both out.

These are the two worst scenarios I have experienced time and time again as I played the game from my early stages. Be careful who you add as a friend. I have met some great people just randomly in an area offering me help, or me offering them a hand. The random friend, crew, guild invites are generally never worth it.

If I interact positively with a fellow player before they request friendship I'll usually agree. Otherwise I don't even think about accepting.

i usually accept everyone lol, cause I'm afraid of hurting peoples feelings even though they are just trying to up their friend count or the other things people have said.
