Thier flagship Antivirus product in itself is not problematic.
Nortons security suites are horrendous however. We are constantly removing these security suites from our clients machines and putting on the antivirus product solving a number of issues on internal business networks. Thier corporate edition is also an excellent product for large offices. However they should not be confused with Nortons Antivirus. Nortons Antivirus is just one piece of these security suites they are selling. They sell these security suites using the publics fears to push them on the market.
Norton's antivirus is an excellent product, doesnt slow my system down at all, used it for years, know it well. I've tried others and although all seem to vary slightly in annoying issues, havent found any one that is better than the other. I just think Nortons gets a bad wrap because its one of the biggest most widely spread players.
Dont use Norton's if you dont like them, thats fine, but use SOMETHING!
So I stick with a well known name, one i've known for years even before Symantec bought "Peter Nortons" franchise of computer utilities.
No matter what antivirus one selects, I highly recommend having one in place. Unless you want to just limit your access and abilities such as Arioch indicated. The issue there however doesnt even sound like it had anything to do with the preventive measures taken, but with the end-users lack of discipline in using their system.
Please everyone USE ANTIVIRUS. Infected systems are just used to spread the techno-disease to more systems, the more it spreads, the harder they are to avoid.
