For me, when Davy Jones died, so did the trilogy. Davy Jones was Pirates of the Caribbean to me
Dont care about Beckett though. He was flatter then flat.
Same goes for Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann.. They wont be in the movie, it is not going to be the same. Same also goes for Pintel and Regetti, even though im not sure if they will return or not (I read that they wont)

Aye many people have different ways of starting a series, and as for you it was with Davy Jones (though most people would go for Jack-Will-Liz-Hector lol). Davy Jones was definitely a character I could connect with, and the only villain I have done so with (other than Barbossa). He was tyranny as a result of a tragic love, and when he died saying "Calypso", I myself asked my father whether he was coming back, and that's how sad I felt for him... and like you said, comparatively Beckett is a flat character. I HATED Beckett when i saw the movie the first time... For how he treated Jones.
Now saying that, let me come to the reason why I like Beckett. He was flat, yes, he was a character who I didn't even feel sad about. When his death scene came I just said "Ooh mesmerizing C.G.I." and probably "I hope he's learned his lesson". Beckett was this character who was sadistic, narcissistic, and who possessed a genocidal hate of pirates which resulted in him destroying all men, women and children who were convicted of associating with piracy. He didn't care for the lives of anyone around him and he was always this mysterious character. Mysterious because, when you look at him his face is just blankly staring at you, trying to take up Machiavellian ways of manipulation. He was meant to signify the darkness of Imperialism and his manipulation which made him control the seas was just evil. And evil because it was 1. just for good business and 2. for eradication of people he just despised for no particular reason (some history to that). Also, his lines... his lines were AMAZING. How he handled situations was said in his lines, and if you looked at his lines a bit closer you can see something else intended. For example that scene, where Liz threatens Cutler with a pistol... He clearly stated that he knew about what happened in Isla de Muerta the previous year and that was something really strange.
"Ah, I see. You think the compass leads only to the Isla de Muerta, and so you hope to save me from an evil fate. But you mustn't worry: I care not for cursed Aztec gold, my desires are not so provincial. There's more than one chest of value in these waters…So perhaps you may wish to enhance your offer." He knew about the Curse of Cortes and the Dead Man's Chest of all things. When the film came I expected him to cower in fear at the sight of the King of the Seas, but he in fact reduced Jones to tears. And in Pirates Online, he made a multinational company join hands with a leader of Undead pirates who swarmed the Caribbean, and betrayed him when he saw the right time for it, even snubbing the Casa's efforts to destroy the Company. I treat Beckett as one of my favourite villains, because other than this, he was like... Lex Luthor? A man limited to his small human body, and powerful mind, to control over something FAR bigger. He and the Joker are a tie in my top villains. Lord Cutler Beckett symbolizing Imperialism, Industrailization and Tyranny. The Joker signifies Anarchy, Philosophy and pure madness. The exact opposites. They have one thing in common though- Psychological Manipulation. They both lie below my all time favourite Dark Lord - Sauron. Maybe even below Emperor Palpatine. You like Maleficent don't you? I somehow found your page on Youtube. Maleficent was someone I was really awed and scared about 10 years ago when I was 5-ish.
But coming back to Pirates of the Caribbean. For me Pirates is about... Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa.... Lord Beckett, Davy Jones, Sao Feng, Will-Liz (okay, I don't hate them), James Norrington, Guv Swann... They're just one of those characters who'll come and go... It's only about Jack and Hector to me. But I shouldn't forget Gibbs and Pintel-Ragetti (sad that this duo isn't coming)...
