What is the purpose of the blogs?

This is probably a silly question.. but what is the purpose of the blogs?? Is it not the same thing as posting a thread? Not just so ye don't think I'm completely clueless.. I know what a blog is (i think) i just don't understand the difference between posting a thread and writing a blog...

A blog is sort of like having a diary somewhat online. It is far different from posting. You post whats going on, and may get comments, but its not a 'discussion' like forums posting, you post what you want to get off your chest, or whats going on with you, and people can comment on it (with your approval). You also have control over your blog somewhat (as long as it stays within the sites rules).
