First, don't take any wooden nickels.
I know that I have become very frustrated in my continuing hunt for famed weapons. I have the lost sword of El Patron, and about 9 or 10 famed items. No famed dolls, and a Rare dagger that is flat out awesome.
What I have done to mitigate some of the angst is playing up the "luck" side of the equation so that I don't get burned out trying to exercise the "determination" factor.
If I make the trip to Tormenta, I give myself either a one hour - or three skull chest limit. If I don't score in that time period I chalk it up to bad luck and move on. Same thing for the mine's in Raven's Cove.
Switching things around helps to keep me from getting burned out (and, frustrated). For instance, if I play on Tuesday I have made a rule for myself to spend the night fishing. Thursday are for sailing only (the treasure fleets make this a little more interesting - I recommend you leave the boarding options open to public and ask crew members if they have any quest items).
Before mastering potions I had a night strictly for the pursuit of alchemical excellence.
Switch things up and see if that helps to lower your blood pressure.
