IMO, chainshot was always worth it to get. I always use it even though it doesn't have the range that thunderbolt does. 2 chainshots fired and the mast is down (aside from some higher level ships where the masts have a bit less give), even managed to use them for a farther distance than normal. Aside from explosives, it's one of my favorite cannon ammo types.

Couple of things I found were that you no longer need to hit the mast dead on. All you have to do now if hit the sails to do damage. I tested this on several ships - never hitting the mast.
