Yes, they would post it days ahead or a day before the update day, this way people know when to expect the downtime and/or if it gets delayed into the next day, etc.
The in-game message is not visible for everyone to see, as it only pops up for the people who are online. They block access to log in to the game after they announcement such message. So, people could check the website to see a notice on the home page explaining the reason why players may/may not be able to login for whatever time period.
As I've said in my other posts, it's a very basic message they could type up, should not take longer than 2 minutes, and anyone can do it. The only other part disney would have to worry about is that someone has to include the release notes if there is a
Game Content Update after the patch has completed.
