Attack on Kingshead,, Part 1

In the dark of night the War Frigate, Dark-Sail Dragon, had wound it's way through the armada off the coast of Kingshead island. Now, sitting quietly offshore of this, the last bastion of the Royal Navy and hated EITC left in the Caribbean, her crew was busy preparing. Then, at a word from her captain, the crew let fly with all 14 guns at once. Shot tore though the air, and smashed heavily into the walls of the fortress. The deck hands hoisted the sails and the captain tacked to gain full sail capacity. The ship plunged through the waters as the crew reloaded and let fly again.

The cannons on the walls remained silent as the heavily armed frigate scurried along the shoreline. The first two barrages were so sudden, the lackadaisical guards didn't know where the cannon fire was coming from. The ship's Captain, knowing full well the value of suprise, was already coming about to position the starboard side guns for another raking attack on the fortress.

The Dark-Sail Dragon, a standard War Frigate of the type typically found in the Caribbean, had been customized with the Black, Blue and Green striped paint and the Blue and Green sails that made her almost invisible on the seas during both night time and day light raids. Flying from the top of her main mast was the black pennant emblazoned with the stylized gold DW symbol, feared throughout the seas. Her captain knew the seas, the winds, and the currents that would enable him to navigate these treacherous waters, pummelling this island, weakening their defenses, so that the other 130 pirates aboard could eventually charge into and plunder this fortress.

The starboard side guns blazed again and again as he steered the ship away from the main pier of the island. Then, at the last moment possible, he called for hard aport, and turned another 180 degrees to run parallel to shore yet again for the portside guns to rake the fortress walls. About this time, the personnel on the island began to arrive at their posts. Having ruled the area for months, unhindered by any pirate activity, they had been falsely lulled into thinking that they needn't man an intense night time watch. Besides, who would ever attack such a stronghold of Navy and EITC activity?

The first few shots from the cannons mounted on the walls of the fort were nothing more than noise. The men firing those cannons had no idea what type of attack was being mounted against them. They were shooting blindly in hopes that they hit something, anything. Finally, one of the night watchmen saw the muzzle flash from the ship board cannons. The word spread quickly where the shots were being fired from, which direction to look and aim.

As the cannon on the walls were being brought to bear on the ship, the Captain decided on a tactic that he had used only once before. Instead of reversing course by turning out to sea, away from the shoreline, he decided to turn inward, pointing the prow of his ship directly at the shore line for a brief period. This move would take them dangerously close to the rocks and cliff at the base of the fortress walls. It would also allow the 6 forward guns to shoot almost point blank into the gates at the land side end of the main pier.

The cannons of the fort, taken completely by suprise by this strange tactic, all shot well out to sea, thinking that the ship would do the obvious in making its turn. This would be their undoing. The six forward guns on the pirate frigate did quick work, their crews feverishly reloading and firing, and tore the massive doors from their frames, destroying the cannonade above the only entrance to the castle like structure.

So ends part 1 of Raid on Kingshead.
I will try to write and post another section of this story sometime in the next few weeks. It will be an ongoing serial.

NOW, if Disney would only;
a) let us customize our ships, (notice, paint, sails, pennant and 2 extra guns forward)
and b) give us a sea vs. land battle arena such as offshore to Kingshead.

LOL.... I wrote that ack in November, and forgot that it was here. Guess there's some renewed interest, so I'll have to start thinking about part 2.
