Unhappy Game crashes when I fire my cannons or broadsides.

I just got a new Gateway computer running vista with 3 gigs of RAM and a 300 gig hardrive. The game runs great and graphics looks awesome even sailing works for the most part but when I fire my cannons manually or use the broadsides on my ship the game crashes every time. I have an ATI MOBILITY RADEON 2600 HD video card and the drivers are dated 1/09/08 and up to date because no newer drivers have been released in the last six months. Is anyone else having this problem and or know how to fix it? I try contacting gateway and pirates online support and they said there is nothing I can do unless a updated video card driver is release
This is so frustrating because of course my current quests require sinking ships and I can no longer do the pearl quest that also crashes when I use my cannons, I dont understand how this is a video card related problem seeing as the game runs great otherwise but thats what support is telling me please help someone. ARRRRRRRRGH!

Gateway Solution Suggestion

Hey Fatburger,

I hope you have found a solution by now. If not, try the following: After logging into POTC, the screen displaying your pirate will come up. At the bottom right of the screen, click "Options" right above the "Quit" icon. In the option page, click the "Geometry" and lower the move the "Shadows" to simple, move the "Special Effects Level" to LOW and move the "Texture Detail Level" to LOW, but keep it COMPRESSED.

I have basically the same Comp. I just bought the Gateway with 4GB of Ram and 300 GB of Space. It also has the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600. I also tried to get updates to no uvail. I played everything fine, with great graphics, until I tried to board a ship. The program would crash, either, as soon as I boarded or minutes after. It didn't matter if I was shooting, steering or just standing there.

I was able to fix the problem with these adjustments. I havn't had a problem since.

Good hint!

Have you also tried modifying your game_options.txt file and setting it to use "pandadx9" for XP or "pandadx10" for Vista?

I like ATI cards, but thier mobility line bites, because ATI does not update drivers for thier mobility chipset and rely on the manufactures that use it to do so.
