Timing, and understanding of the skill. "Protects" does not necessarily imply 100% protection. It does reduce damage not protect you from any damage at all. Timing also seems to be an issue. Anticipating incoming fire and hitting it as or just before the enemy fires seems to work best.

A well-timed Full Sail command, or, depending if speed and not maneuverability is your suit, a Ramming Speed command, can be as good or better. It depends on the situation. Granted, you'll find that Take Cover a really helpful tool, especially upon leaving the islands of Pork and Avarice.
I've never had it as I've never reached 20 in the sails, but I've never heard it to reduce all damage. At best, I heard it either fully blocks a shot or lowers the damage of a volley. All aside, as I lack the experience to help in those manners, CALM DOWN SAILOR!!! |

I have one skill point in it now and it does work but timing is the key. Takes a long time to recharge so use it when you really need it. I still sink alot. lol

Alright i get it....so the more skill points u use on it the more damage it will block. It doesnt take off all damage but just reduces it......still seems a little bit of a waste of a skill point Lol Thx guys

I put one point into it. There have been times when I see that wave of Fury broadsides coming at me, and I hit the button and lived when I really should have died.
The problem is that I don't know if I would have lived anyway. It'd be nice if there was some sort of "1422 damage blocked" indicator that would float up if Take Cover was active so you could see that it was doing some good. |

Take cover works, but is not necessarily that useful in most open sea battles because of its recharge time, and varied efficiency. However, it is helpful for example for the Boss Battle to avoid incoming fire from the bridges, etc.
On the other hand, as mentioned before, hitting full sail, or ramming speed are useful for avoiding deadly incoming volley's, I have often simply turned my ship quickly, normally or with come about to have a deadly volley miss as I make my ship half the width (to the enemy) than it was a moment ago. One observation as of late, the enemy ships seem to shoot alot more... but have terrible aim if your a moving ship. |

well 30% is pretty low to waste a skill point on.. I rather put it in something else and kill the enemy faster

According to two posts above (added on that is) , that 30% is the base protection. More points would make for a bigger protection.

But how do you KNOW it's 30 percent?
It's not like you can set up a controlled experiment. I've had broadsides that I thought would sink me barely move the HP bar, and gotten sunk by shots that I thought wouldn't do any damage. Until we get ship-to-ship PVP and people can try it out, we won't know. |

I guess that is just the ratio used for stuff like Curse, Take Cover, and Open Fire. I dunno really.
