How do you "compress" a link

for instance say wanted to post the link to this thread in stead of it showing up as http://www.piratesonlineforums.com/f...=newthread&f=1 how can i make it look like here

Like this. Take out the spaces next to the square brackets.

Also in Advanced reply, you click on the globe and it comes up a Insert link window. Insert the link there. Once you enter the link and click OK, it will highlight a section....that is where you want t0o put what you want the link to read. Like the one in my sig
