The Main Gouche Dagger is a great dagger to buy. The only problem is that it costs a lot of gold. So its not really worth it. But the Battle Dirk is cooler. If you have a suggestion of what I should buy, tell me.

Don't get any weapon upgrades until you've mastered the weapons, or are close to it.

The exception to this is the pistols.

The reason is that it will affect how much rep you get per kill. Plus, you're better off spending the money on a bigger boat.

Once I get my war sloop (already have the galleon and frigate), then I'll think about upgrading.

Other than pistols don't buy them unless you have the cash to burn. I got them all only because I had nothing else to buy.
