I find the Galleon boring to sail though: all sideward cannons save the rear two, slow sailing speed (seeming all the slower with the huge sails), slow turning. The Frigate is rather fun when you take advantage of those cannons.
I don't really think any of the ships in the game are ugly. I like the Sloop class the most anyway: I'd choose a War Sloop over the other ships if they had all cost the same and I just had to choose one (because you can just sell a War Galleon to buy the War Sloop, and the War Frigate when sold would put you 3/4s of the way toward the Galleon or 10k up over the Sloop). the war frigate is awesome against A.I. ships if you have a smart crew. put 2-4 crew on the front cannons, hit a ship to get it moving toward you, position the frigate to face the incoming ship, and put it in reverse. you can help your crew with 'open fire' and/or 'leadership' as well. if done correctly, you will rarely take damage.

The war galleon is great for 2 things.
1) raising lots of loot 2) raising your sailing rep very fast Why? Simply because if you make padre runs on Abassa you can always get a full boat of low level pirates that are over joyed to be on a high level plunder run ship. Just make sure when you are inclined to go privateering that you select any other ship then your prized war galleon as it is a SLOW, Very hard to steer COFFIN. It is so big and the weak spot also so LARGE that it cannot be missed even at extremely long ranges by rookie pirates. Now if you got a single gunner firing fury a war galleon has but seconds to live after the take cover skill is no longer in affect. Great ship for hauling cargo but not good for using in ship versus ship as EVERYONE always sinks the war frigates first in combat. impossible to miss |

If you are just trying to build your complete set of war ships, I'd get the war galleon first. It is less expensive than the war frigate, yet the enormous cargo holds allow you to build up a lot of gold very quickly. Once your sailing techniques are past "beginner," it makes very little difference (war frigate vs. war galleon) which you drive. They admittedly have very different "feels" though, so don't expect them to work the same, your first time out.
As a pirate, the POTCO war galleon just "looks" more like a real pirate ship. The war frigate, on the other hand, looks snazzy, but would sink when the first real wave washed over its bow. (I know that doesn't happen in POTCO, but should. Maybe when they add the Kraken? Same for all sloop class ships.) The benefit of having front cannons might help a little in SvS, but since they are slower than war sloops, it is much less of an advantage than you'd think. When helping a single person level cannons, a frigate's front cannons can work (as described in another post above) but limits you to very few people up front who actually get a decent angle on the target. In SvS, a war galleon only helps the enemy - when you launch a war galleon in SvS, you are ONLY donating salvage points to the enemy. (Less scrupulous guilds intentionally launch war galleons from the enemy side, to replenish their hull points, much faster than if they stopped for slow repairs. Just sink the non-firing war galleon and poof, "+2600 Salvage.") Again, if your goal is plunder (building up gold quickly) then get a war galleon first. |

Actually I never thought of it that way until recently in SVS when a ship was being chased by 3 ships and the people on board actually suggested another player to launch a opposing war galleon and meet up mid route in order to sink it for salvage to repair the ship.
The things people do to cheat in this game just boggles the mind sometimes. |

This was helpful, I know to save for the frigate now. Thanks!
