Everyone builds their pirate differently. Where you put your skill points depends on what kind of pirate you want. If you don't care about rep, and want super strong weapons, drop as many points into damaging skills as you can. If you're looking to master your weapons quickly (well, relatively) then don't spend points except to unlock new skills.
