I've played other online games, and I think they have a pretty good idea about this. The default is 3rd person, but you can scroll in all the way into first person using your mouse wheels. This lets you to switch between first/third person almost instantly without having to go to controls and checking this option and that.

I tried that and it just gives you a close up view of the back of your head.
