I have a con to add to PotBS, Sony have a hand in making it.
I played Sony's Star Wars Galaxies for 4 years and the quality was extremely poor, it started off well but then they grafted another system on top of the original (NGE) and reduced it to a fraction of it's former depth. Updates took many months to come out and despite having a test server to iron out bugs they still let no end get through to the live update. My all time favorite MMO company is Turbine who make Asheron's Call, updates every month without fail and bugs were dealt with fast.

actually sony doesnt handle anything to do with he game except advertising duties. The updates are always planned ahead of time, and if something goes wronf with an update being bugged, the devs tell us sorry and give us bonus items to make up for the mistake. you cant compare a beautiful game like potbs to a cheap toon town copy like potco. I can design my own sails and use them on my ship. can you? sure you can....... but not in potco. potbs has port contention battles, the best pvp ever, an in depth economy featuring user made items. all items are user made. from each cannon to every ship, all of it was manufactured by other players. potbs lets you keep the derelict ships. does potco? nope. potbs lets you join multiple factions. how about potco? just pirates.... potbs has over 350 available ships in game. potco? lol in conclusion dont judge a game on someone elses opinion, develop your own! |

Okay, I've seen Burning Sea.
Yeah. It's gorgeous. Will I play it regularly? Nope. I already play tabletop games that have thousands of "units", each with their own individual specs. Heck, I own the company that produces it! I, personally, don't want to have to track that stuff in a computer game. I want to be able to just sign on, hop my ship, and go plundering. If I die, I wind up in jail, bust out, repair up, and go plundering some more. Simplicity and straightforwardness. I don't want to get involved in some huge pseudo-historical mechanic about why I can or cannot do a certain thing. If this means I don't shoot "people" in-game, so-be-it. I was showing a buddy of mine POTCO today. Then he showed me WoW. And, again, it reinforced the reason I don't play WoW. He was griping about the auction market being out of whack because other players were gaming the economy. Not to mention the sheer complexity of all the gizmoes, doodads, and magical thingamajiggers you have to track in addition to your stats. Note, I'm NOT against complexity in something like POTCO. I'm just not ready to have to memorize a tome (or keep it handy) just to operate effectively in the game. I play the game to escape reality for a bit. If you want to remember if refit A has more X than refit D, but not as much Y as variant L, that's great. More power to you, and I hope you enjoy Burning Crusade. Personally I'd just be happy with POTCO allowing us to customize our broadsides, providing meaningful activities for pirate masters, and keeping us in decent quests then I'm good. |

I agree. I checked out POTBS, not very happy with it. The game is too complex for just tryin to get away from reality. Its a game! Not to mention I look like a dog begging when I run, I mean how realistic is that? Everyone says its more realistic, thats nice, I want something that is fun and easy to understand. The storyline is easy to follow (oops, my bad there is none in POTBS). Yeah you can make your own ship, customize it any way u want, but wow, does it look like a scene from an old Atari game?
I do like some of the graphics, she sharks in the water, the Kracken too. But IMO, give me simplicity! I'm not a stupid person, but even I had a bit of fun tryin to figure out wth was goin on in the game. Put me on POTC and let me play my pirate, be my pirate and kick ur pirates butt!!!

ok POTBS looks great but yea its not short term im looking for its the long term bc id rather not spen a whole year of my life building up my pirate only for the producers to slow down, stop updating, downgrading servers, and pretty much abandon the game.
knowing disney they wont let that happen bc well its got to Disney name on it (on vmk case however sometimes i wonder if disney even knows vmk exists) and they would rather not tarnish it. Plus i see great potential for this game with the updates

POTBS is implementing guild ownership of buildings by this summer.
POTCO will continue being bland, as its for little kids. We can all say what we think but it boils down to one simple fact.... If you are a kid, you prefer potco. on the other hand.... If you are adult who enjoys playing a mmo that requires skills and strategy rather than hack and slash play, you prefer potbs. If you are all about graphics potbs wins hands down. POTCO is made to run on slow out of date computers, so they obviously have major restrictions, but even on the highest graphic settings, potco is way below average for mmo's. POTBS allows chatting with game developers, so you are never out of the loop as to whats being done. (6 updates in the last 3 weeks, one being 1 gb!) POTBS allows you to attack players from another nation who come to your town. POTBS will have the ability to be the mayor of a town. POTCO allows you to play a game with a bunch of kids, and be nailed by constant bugs and glitches. You can continue talking bad about potbs, but look around you.... POTCO is a joke. FYI... whats so terrible about it? the fact that you cant afford it? Quote:
the movies are the only reason anyone plays potco. the game will die off. and FYI, POTBS has way more updates than potco, and the devs actually interact with you, instead of behind the scenes. Last edited by Dizzy; 04-25-2008 at 03:42 AM.. Reason: Mereged posts and removed trolling comment |

The fact that not only do u have to pay for the initial game, but then pay monthly....thats the joke. If you dont like POTC so much, why are u still here? Ur pirate is a lvl 36, so that means either u have ADD or are a kid.....right? By ur description u mist have ADD.
Its all about personal preference. Ive said my part and I like POTC. Its got a long standing history with me. Ive loved the ride since I was a toddler and old enough to go on it. I went back 2 years ago and loved it just as much. I do not have ADD and am almost old enough to have a teenager of my own.....That just adds another category to ur list. Aduklts who enjoy the Magic and Adventure it brings without the merchants and farming PotBS brings. Hmm, anyone ever notice their name fo the game? POT BS ****.

Not sure where the vitriol comes from.
As to the "way more updates". I've been on about two months now and if I'm not mis-remembering things, POTCO has gone through about 14-18 updates. And yes, many of them were the "bugfix" type. So what? For a moderate MMO, heck ANY software, that's a hell of a good patch schedule. If you're griping about "not much new content", again, POTCO is due for it's first expansion in the June-July timeframe. Note: I'm NOT saying POTCO is the greatest thing since pillage and plunder. It isn't. However, it's a perfectly acceptable fantasy pirate game. Comparing it to a sim like POTBS merely does a disservice to BOTH products. Last edited by Dizzy; 04-25-2008 at 03:42 AM.. I've never tried POTBS but I might give it a shot. POTCO is still my favorite online game and if I try POTBS, I'll never get into the habit of playing it like I do POTCO. They might be slow on updates but I think that Disney is starting to make progress. What I don't get is why do some people have high lvl pirates on POTCO and think it's the worst game ever made? To me that sounds a little odd.....
