Creativity is the key. If your story just went all over the place, with no apparent lead, it won't go as well. Make sure you like where your story is going before you write it. And if writers block hits you, just take a break, read a book for inspiration, go for a walk, do something else. I'll admit, I'm not the best writer, but when an idea is come up with, you just have to put it on paper, ya know? Hope this helps

Try to give your story as much depth as possible.
The one thing that really attracts me to a story is a lot of round (complex) characters, with a well-thought-out, original plot. Some things you'll want to avoid are things like having your pirate start out in the Bilgewater Jail (unoriginal, no offense to those that have used it,) creating a sporadic plot line, and making your story so simple that it doesn't have that kind of "PAZAZZ!" that other stories on here do. Starting the story is always the hardest part of it, and there will be times when you feel your story is being unread or ignored. But, trust me, once you get off the ground, everything will just flow. Best of luck

Okay, the thing I use for my story, is suspense. Loads and loads and loads and loads of suspense. That keeps your readers pulling out their hair and reading it the second you publish a new chapter. Suspense is your friend. Also, as Del said, make your characters very round and complex. For my first story, I made myself and my brother have two sides to them. I'll leave it to you to find them, but people like characters that they can relate to. Make your characters interesting. If you do that, people will like the character, and then if you do something to the character, well... it can break their hearts. Also, throwing in a little bit of humor never hurts. Obviously, you don't want to turn an action story into a comedy, but throwing in a pun or two can always make your story a bit more fun. And of course, most people like epic battles, so practice those.
Hope that helps! |
