Dont ask to be an officer! Please!
Well, many people who like to hang out and recruit people for their guild, such as meself, have encountered this before. You guild someone, and they seem really nice. Then they ask to be an officer, or veteran now that the new rank is out. Most smart guildmasters will say something like: Sorry mate, you have to prove yourself to me by doing _____________. Then I will make you an officer. Then the person gets mad and leaves the guild. One time, someone I just guilded said to me: make me second in command. ?????? Second in command and you've been in the guild for 2 minutes. Yea, that'll happen.
This always really annoys me, so let me just say this: the purpose of guilds is NOT to be an officer! The purpose of guilds is to have fun, make friends, have people to back you up when you need it. Also, if I made everyone an officer, then what would the point of being an officer be? The rank would lose its meaning, and there would be nothing to being one, making the position worthless. Seriously, I make players veterans after they have been in the guild two weeks. Just wait 2 weeks and your a veteran, boom. Not many guildmasters that I know will make you a veteran that easy. Basically, it really annoys me when people as me this as soon as they join, even though I have a dont ask for promotions rule. One time, my guildmates told me somebody asked in guild chat: Can I be an officer? I wasnt even online. They told him he had to prove himself, and then he apparently left the guild when he heard that. Who cares if your an officer in a guild? Its more work for you anyway. Join a guild to have fun, not just to be an officer. |

Some people just think that if they join your guild, they deserve to be promoted. To the spare few guildmasters, they'll give the title of Officer and Veteran freely because, they don't care, as long as they get a steady supply of recruits, they're happy. That's how most guilds fall.
Those who ask to be officers of veterans are cheating themselves. In Officer Promotion, when you ask, you DON'T receive. Being an Officer means more than just recruiting a bunch of your friends, or recruiting a bunch of guildless people without a hint of thought, it's a responsibility. Officers, Veterans, and to a lesser extent, members, are responsible for their actions. Officers more so. What an officer displays to the rest of the game is the Status Quo of that guild, so it's better for GMs to promote courageous, outstanding, accountable members, not just the guy who wants to be one. You will never be able to get rid of those that blatantly ask to be promoted, you just have to ignore them. Focus on others, the pirates that answer to the calls of their guild and help in everyway possible, the pirate who starts up crews and just heads into a cave and starts slaughtering just to keep boredom from setting in, and those who can lead when your not there. Look for the Diamond in the rough, you never know how many diamonds you'll find. |

Exactly. It is rather annoying to me as well. The guild I am in, it took me like a month or 2 to become an officer. If I were to ask, I would be told to be patient and that I would have to prove myself. I would then wait, and become an officer, happily ever after. Not run away crying that I didn't become second in command on the first day.

Just steer clear of Abassa mate, that should fix this problem.

Yes! I know what this is like. People just need to be patient, besides if you have to prove yourself before you can become officer it feels so much more better. And it feels like you actually earned it, therefore it's really special.

now days most (that ask) want to go around that, and start by saying... "I am not asking to be an officer, but how do I become one" |

yes some guilds make everyone an officer. what that leads to is total chaos and no order or control at all. if the gm is not on they can get away with anything they want with out worry of being kicked out. i'm in a guild of 500 and less than 20 officers and it works out great. it is a lot of work for the officers, but we all love our guild and wouldn't have it any other way.

I think it's more annoying when people ask you to join their guild every minute. I finally chose one and stuck with it just so nobody could ask me anymore.
Turns out it was a great choice. The guild has been very helpful in my quests and leveling up. |

Theres a little thing, well, in my book...a big thing...called "seniority". There are other members usually waiting for promotion. Veteran is a great new rank...but still...can have its fall backs. If you give the rank veteran to too many members without care...and those members recruit whomever they please without following some strict guidelines....the foundation of your guild can be weakened...spammers, flamers, trolls, spies....oh my!!!! Good members start to walk...
In some guilds, there are more rank levels than those designated by dis. But, usually, they are limited spots...and are proportional to population in guild. In the two main guilds I have pirates as officers, we have the "do not ask to be an officer rule", and recruiters must explain(as required to do for all rules to a new recruit)... its a promotion that comes from the guildmaster, after time spent doing good for your guild and fellow pirates. And, anyone who causes grief over rules shouldn't be recruited. Last edited by seafox; 10-06-2010 at 11:14 PM.. |

Good policy!
![]() I also will not guild people who approach me out of the blue asking, begging or demanding to be guilded. I won't guild someone until I've had a chance to spend some time with them in game, get to know them a bit and see how they interact with other players. Most of the good guilds who have survived and prospered in this game have seniority policies in place regarding officer promotions. |

Ah... Officers. About time someone touched on this topic. BAD OFFICERS destroyed our last guild. BAD OFFICERS could destroy this one. That is why only people from our own guild who we believe are trustworthy, or somebody who is extremely dedicated to a sense of duty may be CONSIDERED for this rank. I only am because I was a member of our old guild, and an original member of this one.
Many times, people ask the GM, no ask isn't the right word... BEG the GM to be officer. There is a no of course. Then they throw a temper tantrum and leave (before I get a chance to remove them of course) Only members level 20+ up or ones who have another pirate 20+ and can prove it can be officers also. We often hand out Veteran rank a lot to members with no infractions, simply because it boosts morale. Veteran rank hand outs may or may not be a wise choice depending on your managing style. If you hate troublemakers like nothing else, and have a complicated infractions system up; then go ahead. If you are quite layed-back on this subject, and don't like to get in these little squabbles; then this tactic isn't for you. Remember, Veterans can still invite whomever they want. Keep that in mind. |
