Sounds like you were at the poker table a little too much. When you have high winnings, it's best you leave so you won't loose it all.
I suggest that you sink some ships, that'll really raise your gold.

As BD said, sink ships, and also, go after undead skeletons.
 They'll give you a bit of gold wich is good after poker.

best bet depending on ur levels is to kill high level enimies try to get enough for a light frig again then sink flag ships or just join a good crew/guild
