Fabulous movie. I love all the plays on dogs and their attitudes, manners, paintings involving them, etc. The way they talked, were distracted, the way they reasoned: pure genius. Basicly, the dogs were given human ability but still remained dogs.

As well, the story was nice and touching. I loved the idea of a boring life being a fine life, boring moments being great moments, etc. The old man's life being the first few minutes of the story were a great few minutes.

The first few minutes of the story, with practically no dialog, might be the best few minutes of storytelling I've ever seen in a movie.

I saw it at the local drive-in (one of two remaining in my area) so you didn't get the same effect as you did during the sad portion of Marley & Me (which I saw in a packed theatre on Christmas Day) but even with that said, the usual din of the drive-in was silent during that portion of the film.
