Keep in mind that you can't buy any of the war ships until your sailing level is level fifteen.

Sailing is one of the fastest ways to earn gold in the game. If you have a regular Galleon or Frigate you should be able to get about 2k(2000) gold an hour. Treasure sense is also a good skill you'd like to have if you're looking for fast gold.
My treasure sense is rank three and when on my war frigate I can get about 500 gold on every trip. If I'm lucky and get a lot of royals I can usually get 700-900 gold.

If you can get more gold doing poker or blackjack then you're better off at the tables. When I'm really lucky at the tables I can get about 3000 gold in ten minutes. But if you start to lose, quit while you're on top.
