A new boss battle question

I'm up to the boss battle, and my sailing is lvl24, but I've used my skill points in other things (more gold, faster sailing, longer speed burst, etc.) so I have 1 more skill point coming and no points in ramming speed or take cover.

Am I going to have to level up an entirely new character or do you think it can be done w/out take cover? Does a member of a crew get bb credit?
