Yes, Disney bought Club Penguin for somewhere around $700 million dollars back in 2007, one year before they closed VMK.
Club Penguin never had a name change. It was always named Club Penguin, even before Disney bought it.
They need to get their money worth from their purchase, that's the only reason, in my opinion, for it staying open.
